Lot Of 2 Reggie Jackson 2003 Topps Gallery Cards – Red & Green Backgrounds!!

These are neat.  And they are so nice, that I could see enlarged versions of them hanging in ‘man caves’ all across the US.

Have a look:

Coming from the 2003 Topps Gallery set, these cards fit the ‘Gallery’ theme perfectly.

I wish Topps would bring these back – even if it was just once every five or ten years.  These cards are certainly worth keeping in the public eye.

I’m hooked!

Happy Birthday Keith Hernandez!!!

Happy Birthday Keith Hernandez!!!

Keith Hernandez turns 60 years old today.

Never quite getting the credit he deserves, Keith Hernandez was a stellar player for 17 major league seasons.

Probably most well known for his amazing defense at first base, Hernandez made playing the position cool long before Don Mattingly did so.  Hernandez won 11 Gold Glove awards for being the best defensive first baseman in the National League.  11 trophies during 17 seasons is extremely impressive as it shows just how consistent ‘Mex’ was at the hot corner.

Hernandez was also a league Most Valuable Player in 1979 when he played for the Cardinals.  Along with a Gold Glove award and his first of five All-star selections, Hernandez was also extraordinary on offense that year.  He batted .344 while collecting 210 hits, ripping 48 doubles, driving in 105 runs and scoring 111 runs as well.  A perfectly well-rounded season and one certainly worthy of being tagged as the MVP!!!

Happy Birthday Mr. Hernandez!!!

Happy Birthday Juan Marichal!!!

Happy Birthday Juan Marichal!!!

Juan Marichal turns 77 years old today.

In photographs, I find Juan Marichal to be one of the most polarizing pitchers ever.  An extremely photogenic player, Juan and that incredible wind-up will stop you dead in your tracks whether you are looking at pics on the web, flipping through pages of a magazine, or in my case diving through boxes of baseball cards.

I don’t know that much about Marichal, but from the several books that I have read, he is regarded very highly by some of the greatest hitters and pitchers from his era – and that goes a long way with me.

Happy Birthday Mr. Marichal!!!

Happy Birthday Mickey Mantle!!

Happy Birthday Mickey Mantle!!

Today we celebrate Mickey Mantle’s birthday.

And while I am way too young too pass around first-hand stories about watching ‘The Mick’  roam around center field for the New York Yankees, I do have the next best thing.  You see, my dad is from the Bronx and spent much of his youth with his older brother in and around Yankee Stadium.  Back when baseball was the sport of choice for America’s youth, my dad and uncle and thousands of other kids around the New York area worshiped Mickey Mantle.

The stories that have been shared with me are priceless.  Sneaking into the stadium or ditching classes early to catch playoff games on the radio.  And the players that they got to see and follow are as historic as they get, with Mickey Mantle leading the way!!!

So on this day, the entire ’30-YOC’ family wishes Mr. Mickey Mantle a Happy Birthday!!!

Giancarlo Stanton 2014 Topps Archives – Gold – 1980 Topps Design

FINALLY!!!

This one has been a long time coming, months in fact.  When the Topps Archives release came, I knew that I would want to try to grab some of the parallel cards of my favorite cards from the set.  But, I never knew it would be as tough as it has been.

I was able to piece together the Fergie Jenkins rainbow much easier, but trying to do the same for the Giancarlo Stanton rainbow has left me in fits.

Yes, nabbing the base card was easy.  But, that was it!

Until now, that is.  As I have finally added card #2 to my collection – the Gold card.  Each Gold card is stamped to 199 copies.  My card of Giancarlo is number 161/199.

Have a look:

And now, I need just one more.  Time for me to dig in and seek out the toughest one in the set – the Silver Foil version.

Wish me luck.
