Text on the back – Bronx, New York, July 4, 1983: Yankees’ southpaw Dave Righetti today pitched a no-hitter vs. Red Sox. He’s 1st lefty to hurl gem in Yankee Stadium. St. Louis, Missouri, September 26, 1983: Cardinals’ right-hander Bob Forsch tonight pitched the second no-hitter of his career. He whitewashed Expos, 3-0. Oakland, California, September 29, 1983: A’s right-hander Mike Warren tonight pitched a no-hitter vs. White Sox. He’s 13th rookie ever to accomplish feat.
25 years later – 3 no-hitters in the same season – you don’t see that very often anymore.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 20, 1983: Philles’ Steve Carlton’s 3,509th strikeout has exceeded lifetime total of Walter Johnson. Boston, Massachusetts, August 13, 1983: Royals’ Gaylord Perry has recorded his 3,509th strikeout to surpass Walter Johnson’s 3,508.
25 years later – Sine 1984, Johnson’s mark has been passed by 5 more pitchers.

Headline – ‘Quisenberry Sets Record With 39th Save Of Season’
Text on the back – Anaheim, California, September 13, 1983: Royals’ reliever Dan Quisenberry tonight set a major league record by recording his 39th save of the season. The former mark of 38 saves was established by John Hiller of Detroit in 1973. Dan entered tonight’s game with one out in the 9th inning. He retired the two batters he faced to preserve Royals’ 4-3 verdict ve. California Angels.
25 years later – 38 saves is a nice number, but the new threshold for greatness is 50. So far 50 or more has been accomplished 11 times.

The 1984 Topps ‘1983 Highlights’ 6-Card Subset – Card #2
Headline – ‘Rickey Henderson Steals 100 Bases For Third Time’
Text on the back – Oakland, California, September 13, 1983: A’s outfielder Rickey Henderson tonight became the first player in major league history to reach the 100-stolen base milestone for the third time in his career. Entering the game with 98 thefts, he swiped #’s 99 and 100 in the third inning. Rickey recorded 100 stolen bases in 1980 and set the modern record with 130 thefts in 1982.
25 years later – Henderson ended his career with 1,406 stolen bases. The player in second place, Lou Brock, is almost 500 swipes behind.

The 1984 Topps ‘1983 Highlights’ 6-Card Subset – Card #1
Headline – ‘Carlton Wins 300th, He’s All-Time Strikeout King’
Text on the back – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, October 2, 1983: Phillies’ southpaw Steve Carlton has finished the season with 3,709 strikeouts. a new all-time record. Prior to 1983, the mark had been 3,508 whiffs by Walter Johnson. Steve reached yet another milestone at St. louis, September 23rd, by becoming only the 16th pitcher ever to have achieved 300 career victories.
25 years later – Carlton ended his career with 329 victories(good for 11th all-time) and 4,136 strikeouts(4th).
I LOVE SUBSETS!!!!
I love everything that they represent. While a 792-card set issued by Topps on an annual basis back in the 1980’s was a nice way to get prepared for another baseball season, it was the subset that gave you the history, the special moments, the memories we will cherish!!
The 1984 Topps ‘1983 Highlights’ set focuses on just that – baseball highlights from the 1983 season.
I picked up this 6-card doozie for just $1 on Ebay. I am happy to own it, and I will share it with you all day long. And while doing so, I thought it would be fun to reflect back on this set 25 years after its release.
Enjoy the ride – I will too!!!
With my 1985 Topps #1 Draft Picks subset complete, I sprinted to Ebay to see what other subsets I could find from my favorite decade.
And while the pickings were slim, I did stumble upon a few that I was able to scoop up for very low prices.
Without giving all of the details away, here are a few hints as to what you can expect to be seeing from me and ’30-YOC’ over the course of the off-season….

Let me say that going after these subsets has been a blast. Whether it is collecting them card by card or getting lucky enough to find them completed and affordable, each and every one of these has brought back some wonderful memories of the stars of the 1980’s.
