Million Dollar Question – Who Is Your #1 Draft Pick In Fantasy Baseball?

Million Dollar Question – Who Is Your #1 Draft Pick In Fantasy Baseball?

The draft for ’30-YOC’ fantasy baseball is this Sunday evening.  And I pretty much have my strategy in place for how I want to attack the 2014 season.  Equally, I am always curious to see what others would do if they had the first pick in the draft.

Do you go with the crafty veteran that is putting up unreal numbers?  Do you go with the young guy who has become elite almost overnight?  Or do you go with the most consistent pitcher in the game?

For me, I tend to lead towards consistency with my picks, but I have also never been awarded with the #1 pick in any draft in which I have been a part of so I have never had to make that single, crucial decision.

Maybe this year that will change.  Maybe not…

But, I am ready to have fun on draft night as I craft my roster.

Million Dollar Question – Is Now The Time To Invest In Craig Biggio Rookie Cards?

Million Dollar Question – Is Now The Time To Invest In Craig Biggio Rookie Cards?

With the progression of Craig Biggio’s Hall of Fame vote tally, I would say that the odds of his election into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2015 is likely a 90% certainty.

In 2013, Biggio tallied 68.2% of the vote.  And in 2014, he claimed 74.8% of the votes cast.

Barring any ground-breaking, and earth-shattering news, I believe that Biggio will easily earn the extra votes to hit the magical 75% needed for enshrinement.

So, is it time to invest in Mr. Biggio now?  Buy hoards of his rookie baseball cards with the goal of flipping them when his name is more relevant in the hobby than it is today?

I am not one to turn down an option like this.  But, I am also not the guy that wants to buy a card for a quarter to sell it for a dollar as the associated Ebay and PayPal fees will surely put you in the red…

What do you think?  Invest in Craig Biggio with the goal of making money a year from now or pass?

Million Dollar Question – What Is The Ultimate Tom Glavine Rookie Card?

Million Dollar Question – What Is The Ultimate Tom Glavine Rookie Card?

Alright gang, we have already discussed the rookie cards of 2014 Hall of Fame members Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas.

Tonight, it is time to round out the group and discuss the rookie cards of the final member of this Hall of Fame class – Mr. Tom Glavine.

Just like with the prior guys, I will show you all of his major-brand rookie baseball cards, and you select the one you like the best.

Sound good?

Great, let’s do this!!!

Wow, after pulling those images I was taken aback by the lack of action and originality on these four rookie cards – 3 mugshots and a beauty!

At this point it may be a moot point, but we will proceed with the process anyways…

So – What Is The Ultimate Tom Glavine Rookie Card?

Like most (I believe), my vote goes to 1988 Score.  Great action, great colors, and such a huge difference compared to the other three…

Million Dollar Question – What Is The Ultimate Frank Thomas Rookie Card?

Million Dollar Question – What Is The Ultimate Frank Thomas Rookie Card?

As one would expect, after the announcement of Frank Thomas, Tom Glavine, and Greg Maddux’s Hall Of Fame election, there was a solid spike in the number of new listings featuring these players on Ebay.  Surely, this was a move by the non-collector to take advantage and strike while Maddux’s, Thomas’, and Glavine’s names were once again highly relevant in the hobby.

As you would expect, cards, autographs, and memorabilia of these three guys began to sell again at a pretty good pace. And the prices went from fair to overpriced to outrageous.

Just like with last week’s Greg Maddux question, this got me to thinking ‘What Is The Ultimate Frank Thomas Rookie Card’?

So, that is tonight’s Million Dollar Question.

While there are not a ton of choices, there is a small handful to choose from.

Here they are:

1990 Topps:

Frank Thomas 1990 Topps

1990 Fleer:

1990 Bowman:

1990 Leaf:

1990 Score:

That’s a pretty solid crop of rookie baseball cards.

But, which one is the ‘Ultimate One’?

Hmmm….  Decisions, decisions….

I like the Topps card because it takes me back to 1990 when I was living in Chicago and I first saw Frank Thomas play.  This card was hot back then – and highly sought after by kids in the Chicago-area.  I also really like the action that the Leaf card brings.  And the Score card is very nice as well – how is such a big guy framed perfectly in this image?

My pick is the Topps card – it transports me right back to 1990.  And that is what this hobby is all about for me.  Frank Thomas was a potential star back then, and I am happy to be able to say that I watched a lot of his games when he first broke into the majors.  This Topps card features him in his old Auburn college uniform, and I have strong memories of pulling cards from the 1989 and 1990 Topps set that showed the game’s high draft picks in their college gear.

It is 1990 Topps for me!!!

And now it is your turn – What Is The Ultimate Frank Thomas Rookie Card?

Million Dollar Question – What Is The Ultimate Greg Maddux Rookie Card?

Million Dollar Question – What Is The Ultimate Greg Maddux Rookie Card?

After the announcement of Greg Maddux’s election to the Baseball Hall Of Fame, I saw a pretty decent spike in the number of Greg Maddux related new listings on Ebay.  Surely, this was a move by the non-Maddux collector to take advantage and strike while Maddux’s name was once again highly relevant in the hobby.

This also made me smile as my Greg Maddux player collection was completed a few years ago and I would not have to sift through any price-gouging tactics in order to capture cards for my collection.

As you would expect, Maddux cards began to sell again at a pretty good pace. And the prices went from fair to overpriced to outrageous.

This got me to thinking ‘What Is The Ultimate Greg Maddux Rookie Card’?

So, that is tonight’s Million Dollar Question.

While there are not a ton of choices, there is a decent lot to choose from.

Here they are:

1987 Topps Traded

1987 Fleer Updated

1987 Donruss Rated Rookie

1987 Donruss ‘The Rookies’

maddux 1987 the rookies

Not a bad crop of cards.  And I am happy to say that I own a copy of each in my collection.

But, which one is the ‘Ultimate One’?

Hmmm….  Decisions, decisions….

Amazingly, none of these Maddux cards made it to my ‘Fab 5’ when I completed my player collection a few years back.  The reason is simple – I don’t have too many memories of the shaggy haired pitcher with the weak mustache.  Instead, I recall the professor-esque looking guy with the business man’s haircut and slightly chubby face.

Back to the cards…  My favorite card among the four options is the Fleer Update card.  The colors from the 1987 Fleer design are very complementary to those of the Chicago Cubs.  And with the backdrop of a blurred Wrigley Field being present, the Maddux image has a nice 3-D effect happening.

So, my choice is the 1987 Fleer Update card!

Million Dollar Question – Which Do You Prefer: Topps’ Emerald Foil OR Ruby Foil?

Million Dollar Question – Which Do You Prefer:  Topps’ Emerald Foil OR Ruby Foil?

With the launch of the 2014 Topps Series 1 baseball card set last week, we all got a taste of the first new product for 2014.

Personally, I really like the cards.  The image selection (on most) is strong, and the graphics are complementary to the image while not being or taking away from the main attraction – the photo.

With this new set comes a new version to a common Topps theme – a colored parallel.

In 2013, we had the Emerald Foil Parallel as seen here:

Trout Emerald

And now, in 2014, we have the Ruby Foil card:

Stanton Ruby

This got me to wondering which one was better – better to look at, better baseball color, etc.  It also got me to wondering if my opinion was in the majority or the minority.

So, I now pose that question to you:  Which Do You Prefer:  Topps’ Emerald Foil OR Ruby Foil?

For me, I will go with the Ruby Foil.  Throughout the year last year, I always thought that the Emerald was a bit too dark and which ultimately made the images on the cards appear quite a bit darker.  The Ruby (so far) looks and feels lighter.  And I also think the Ruby-Red color is a better baseball fit as Red is a commonly shared color among many of MLB’s teams.

My choice is Ruby!!

Harper Ruby

And now it if your turn to choose.  Which Do You Prefer:  Topps’ Emerald Foil OR Ruby Foil?

Sound off now!

Million Dollar Question – Will Alex Rodriguez Play Another Major League Game, And If So, Will It Be For The Yankees??

Million Dollar Question – Will Alex Rodriguez Play Another Major League Game, And If So, Will It Be For The Yankees??

The major league baseball career of Alex Rodriguez appears to be in limbo.

What we do know is that as for now, A-Rod will not be playing during the 2014 regular season or postseason.  He is allowed to return to major league game action in 2015.  And he is under contract with the Yankees.

He has said that he will take the time off to rehab old injuries, get in game shape, and hone his skills.

He has said multiple times that he wants to return.  And that he wants to play for the Yankees.

But, will he???

The relationship between Rodriguez and the team has surely soured as both sides have pointed fingers at one another over ‘he said / she said’ stuff as well as private medical issues being disclosed and made public.

To say that this whole things has been a horrible soap opera is an understatement.

My questions tonight are simple – Will Alex Rodriguez play in the majors again?  And if so, will he play for the Yankees?

alex rodriguez photo

My thoughts, for now, are as such – I do believe that he will play again.  I feel that he is owed way too much money to simply walk away from the game.  And he also has some major milestones to bypass that I think he wants to go after – 660 home runs and 3,000 hits.

Now, the team he plays for is another thing completely.  It is very likely that he never wears Yankees colors again, and if I was a betting man, I would say ‘No, not as a Yankee’.  They are sour on him, and he has no problem calling them out.

I think someone will pick him up, and I think that the Yankees would be happy to take on a large part of the money left on his contract to ensure that he never wears pinstripes again.

What are your thoughts?  Does he play again?  And does he call New York home any longer?

Let me hear it!

Million Dollar Question – What Player Will Have The Most Cards In The 2014 Topps Series 1 Release?

Million Dollar Question – What Player Will Have The Most Cards In The 2014 Topps Series 1 Release?

OK gang, as we all know, the 2014 Topps Series 1 product release is scheduled for the middle of next week.  And I anticipate that the full checklist will be made available in the coming days and Topps prepares for another season of baseball card production.

So, my question to you is this – What Player Will Have The Most Cards In The 2014 Topps Series 1 Release?

Who is going to have the most cards in the flagship set plus all of the inserts and subsets that will make up the 2014 Series 1 release?

My guess is the reigning NL MVP – Andrew McCutchen.  McCutchen was ‘All-World’ in 2014 – MVP, All-Star, Silver Slugger, Postseason with the Pirates.

I think McCutchen is the guy and I would not be surprised if he had 8-10 cards in the full Series 1 set.

McCutchen

Who do you got???

Million Dollar Question – Will Topps Honor Mariano Rivera In Their 2014 Series 1 Release??

Million Dollar Question – Will Topps Honor Mariano Rivera In Their 2014 Series 1 Release??

While I have yet to see a final checklist for the 2014 Topps Series 1 release, I am eager to see if Topps will do anything to honor the recently retired Mariano Rivera.

I have yet to see anything that says that they will, but I would be shocked if they did not.  Rivera is the class of the sport, and he is wildly popular among collectors – well past Yankees fans and collectors.

Surely something to honor him is in the works for Series 1, right??

What do you think??

Million Dollar Question – As The 2014 Collecting Year Begins, What Are You Most Looking Forward To?

Million Dollar Question – As The 2014 Collecting Year Begins, What Are You Most Looking Forward To?

This question is open enough to bring out a wide array of replies, and I look forward to seeing the things that people bring up as they offer up a reply.

For me, there is a lot to look forward to as the 2014 collecting year begins.

But, there is also one thing that stands out quite a bit more than anything else.

That thing?

The Miami Marlins

Yep, my Marlins. I am very eager to see how they are treated this year, especially by Topps.  The team now has two superstars – Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Fernandez.  And with a few more household names on the roster like Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Rafael Furcal on the roster, I am hopeful that we get more than 3-card and 4-card team sets from products like Gypsy Queen, Allen & Ginter, and Tribute.  The Marlins are stocked up young players, and many are capable of becoming major contributors to the team’s success and I will think that it will be interesting to see if and when Topps latches on to it.  Players like Nate Eovaldi, Steve Cisek, Marcel Ozuna, Christian Yelich, Adeiny Hechavaria, Henderson Alvarez, and Garrett Jones should all be decent options for Topps to throw into some sets this year.

Time, and checklists, will tell.  And I cannot wait!

How about you?  What are you most looking forward to seeing out of the 2014 collecting year??
