Happy Birthday Vince Coleman!!!

Happy Birthday Vince Coleman!!!

Vince Coleman turns 53 years old today.

Vince Coleman had one of the most impressive rookie seasons I witnessed during my youth.

In 1985, as a rookie of the St. Louis Cardinals, Coleman debuted with a bang and the entire sport took notice.  Notching 170 hits, while scoring 107 runs, Coleman was the ideal lead-off hitter for the Cards’ star-studded line-up.  Oh yeah, he also stole 110 bases in his rookie year too – simply amazing.  Coleman’s season was impressive enough to earn him the Rookie of the Year award in a unanimous vote!!!

While Coleman continued to have amazing success during his days with the Cardinals, he was never able to replicate that excitement he brought to the base paths once he moved on to other teams.  Still a threat, he still collected between 20-50 swipes per season after he left ‘The Arch’.

Happy Birthday to Vince Coleman!!!

Vince Coleman ‘Fab Five’ – Card #1 – 1988 Score

Now that my Vince Coleman player collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #1 – 1988 Score

COLEMAN FAB 1

I could have gone with either his base or Highlights card for my #1 spot in my ‘Vince Coleman Fab Five’ but ultimately, I like the Purple color and the action is perfectly centered on this shot.

Based on the camera angle of this image, I am guessing that the photographer that snapped this shot was somewhere close to where the catcher sits.  And that positioning allows us a chance to see what the catcher sees when Coleman takes that large lead and prepares to blast off from first to second base!

Go Get ‘Em Vince!!!

Card #2 – 1990 Score

COLEMAN FAB 2

It should be pretty clear why this one stands out among the many cards of Vince Coleman that were eligible for this elite list of five.

It’s the Red & Yellow – a perfect blend of color for Coleman and his Cardinals team colors.

It simply could not get any better!!!

On a side note, when I was a kid, we used to think that this card was perfectly colored for Hulk Hogan too…  🙂

COLEMAN FAB 3

While not known as an elite defender during his major league career, you would have to think that Vince Coleman had an advantage in chasing down fly balls simply due to his speed, right?

He was far from a horrible defender – in 13 seasons, he had a 97.4% fielding percentage and committed just 68 errors in 1,311 games.

This card from the 1991 Score set captures that speed on the outfield grass very well!

Vince Coleman ‘Fab Five’ – Card #4 – 1988 Fleer

Now that my Vince Coleman player collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #4 – 1988 Fleer

COLEMAN FAB 4

Because all games played at Wrigley Field prior to 1988 were played during the day, the ballpark was a hot-spot for sports photographers.

The reason?

Natural light!

No messing with flashes.  No worries about images coming out too dark.  Natural lighting serves as the best way to capture the action.

And that is why Wrigley Field, and the famous brick half-wall behind the batter is seen in a lot of cards that were issued in the 1980’s.

I LOVE IT!!!!

COLEMAN FAB 5

I like how quickly baseball card companies attached themselves to Vince Coleman after he emerged on the scene with the Cardinals.  After a successful rookie campaign, both Fleer and Donruss founds ways to add additional cards to their base sets so Coleman could be featured twice.

Vince Coleman and Willie McGee were both huge spark-plugs for the Cardinals’ offense – each of them scoring 100+ runs in 1985, Coleman with 107 and McGee with 114.

The Donruss card fails, but the Fleer is sweet!

Friends, I am very happy to announce that after months and months of collecting, I have put all of the pieces together on another player collection.

This time around it is the collection of Cardinals’ legend – Vince Coleman!!

The collection took me a few months to put together, but it allowed for me to once again enjoy baseball cards of the 1980’s while also re-introducing some great images to me again.

Here is a picture of the full collection:

And as you know, a complete collection means another ‘Fab 5′ is headed to ’30-YOC’.  Starting on Monday, I will showcase my favorite five cards from this newly completed PC.
