Darryl Strawberry 1984 Donruss – Rookie Card!!!

Darryl Strawberry 1984 Donruss – Rookie Card!!!

While not the most appealing rookie card ever issued, a rookie card is a rookie card!  And of the three 1984 issues classified as rookie cards of Darryl Strawberry, I would rank them in this order – Topps, Fleer, and Donruss.

Straw had a fine year in 1984.  His first full year in the big leagues, Darryl collected 131 hits, 27 doubles, 26 home runs, 27 stolen bases, and 97 RBI.  Not too shabby for a 22-year old kid, huh???  And he also made his first All-star team in 1984 – his first of 8 straight.

A fine addition to my Darryl Strawberry collection!!!

1984 Donruss Jumbo Andre Dawson

This is the second Jumbo card I picked up of Andre Dawson.  It’s a 1984 Donruss issue.  You can see the first one I got, the ’83 issue, by clicking here.

I like this card but it’s hard to keep it with my collection due to it’s size, but I’ll manage to put it in a safe place.

Question: Since the Washington Nationals used to be the Montreal Expos, will they ever revert back to wearing the old Powder-Blue uniforms of the Expos during any of their ‘heritage’ nights??

1984 Donruss Dave Winfield

1984 Donruss Dave Winfield

Another great card of Winfield during his playing days with the Yankees.  My only criticism of this otherwise great card would be that his bat is cut off at the top.  For some reason, I like to see full pictures of the really big guys that show off just how enormous these players were…

Guys like Dave Winfield and Randy Johnson deserve to be shown in this way to display their amazing size!!

1984 Donruss Andre Dawson

1984 Donruss Andre Dawson

I love this card, but have just 1 complaint.  The color seems to be off.  The usually very light powder blue color of the Expos uniform seems too dark in this shot.

Other that that, this card is a winner.  Look at the concentration on Dawson’s face as he gets prepared to watch the ball come towards him.  Very similar to Dave Stewart, Dawson had a stare that would scare me if I were the opposing player.

Baseball Card Show Purchase #6

Amazingly enough in that same 3 for $1 Cubs box were all of these Fergie Jenkins cards.

Of the lot that I pulled, the 1984 Donruss card is an addition to my player collection that I needed.  The remainder are all bonus cards that I just couldn’t resist – especially for the price!!!  In this lot, there are a few serial-numbered cards too.  I have not been able to identify them all yet, but I really like the cards that feature the vintage photos with the modern technology and design of today’s cards.

I especially like the Upper Deck card in the upper right corner of this scan…
