Card #8 – Mays Voted Into Hall Of Fame

A near unanimous selection Willie Mays was voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.  Capturing 409/432 of the votes cast, Mays is considered to be one of the most complete players that the game has ever witnessed.

Card #7 – Mays Traded To New York Mets

Nearing the end of his playing days, and during the 1972 baseball season, Willie Mays was traded to the New York Mets from the Giants.

Mays called New York home as a member of the Giants prior to their move to San Francisco in 1958.

He sure does look odd in that Mets’ uniform doesn’t he??

Card #6 – Mays’ 600th HR Levels Padres

During the 1969 baseball season, and at 38 years of age, Willie Mays reached the major milestone of 600 big league home runs.  This landmark home run marked Mays as just the second player in major league history to reach the 600-home run plateau.

Card #5 – Mays Wins Second NL MVP

In 1965, Willie Mays won his second MVP award; his first award came during the 1954 season.

His numbers from 1965?  .317 batting average, .398 on-base percentage, 177 hits, 52 home runs, 21 doubles, 118 RBI, 112 runs scored, 9 stolen bases, and a Gold Glove award.

I would agree – Very Valuable!!

Card #4 – Four Homers By Willie Mays

On April 30, 1961, Willie Mays connected for four home runs in one game.  Leading the Giants to a 14-4 victory, Mays was also responsible to driving in eight runs.

Mays became just the ninth player in major league history to hit four home runs in one game.

Card #3 – Mays Joins Elite 30/30 Club

In the 1956 and 1957 baseball seasons, Willie Mays was the ultimate offensive threat.  Putting his speed and power together, he became elite.  In 1956, he hit 36 home runs while swiping 40 bases.  And in the following season, 1957, he reached the 30/30 milestone again by smashing 35 homers and stealing 38 bases.

Card #2 – Mays Makes Historic Catch

Often considered to be the greatest defensive play in baseball history, this outstanding catch still gets ‘air-time’ every year.  The fact that this catch happened in front of a national audience during the baseball playoffs only added to its legend.

One could certainly argue that more amazing catches have been made since, but this is ‘The Catch’ that still stands out amongst all others.

Card #1 – Mays Voted Rookie Of The Year

This card celebrates Mays’ rookie season.  Appearing in 121 games back in 1951, Mays stole the show by hitting .274 with 22 doubles and 20 home runs.  Mays scored 59 runs during that campaign while scoring 68.

For his efforts, Willie Mays took home 18 of 24 votes cast for the National League’s Rookie Of The Year Award.
