Florida Marlins 1996 Pinnacle Aficianado Team Set

Florida Marlins 1996 Pinnacle Aficianado Team Set

Taking a slight break from newly released 2014 Marlins team sets, I am happy to be able to show off this one.  This 6-card set is from the 1996 Pinnacle Aficianado set.

I scored this team set for just $1.00 and I am happy that I did.  The set offers a strange design, with some cards being done in full-color and others in Sepia tones.  And As you can see below, there is also a Black & White pixellated cameo of each player on the side of the card.

See for yourself:

I have no idea what this style is called or even if there is a name for it.  Does it look great?  I don’t know – I am on the fence with it.  I will say, however, that it is unique and I like Pinnacle’s desire to attempt something different.

I really like the mix of players featured too.  Between the legends of Dawson and Conine to the younger stars of the team like Sheffield and CJ, this one has something for all Marlins fans.

1996 Score Florida Marlins Team Set

1996 Score Florida Marlins Team Set

I don’t own many cards from this period – you can say that I was officially out of the hobby in 1994/95.

But, I did add the Andre Dawson card from this set to my collection a few years ago when I decided to try to build the ‘Ultimate Dawson’ collection.

Since that was the only card that I went after from this release, I had no idea how nice the set was.  The cards feature tons of action.  The White border allows for the colors to really pop.  And the Score logo has been colored to match the team’s colors.

Check it out:

1996 SCORE A

1996 SCORE B

Kind of funny how the team’s biggest star (Gary Sheffield) has the worst card in the set, but no biggie…

I have to say that the matching the Score logo’s coloring to that of the team was a great move – it really ties it all together.  And to be honest, at first I thought that all of the cards from this set featured a Black and Teal brand logo.  It was not until a search on Ebay proved to me that Score intentionally went out of their way to match every team’s color scheme to the logo for their cards.

Another great looking Marlins team set for my collection!!!!

Florida Marlins 1996 Bowman Team Set

Florida Marlins 1996 Bowman Team Set

The 1996 Bowman baseball card design is not going to win any awards for graphic artistry.

But, the set’s color scheme does allow for the Black, White, and Teal of the Florida Marlins team colors to really stand out and take center-stage.

I recently picked up the team set on Ebay for $1.00.

Here is a look at my investment:

As I look through this set again, you can just start to some of the pieces coming together that formed the 1997 World Series team.  From Castillo and Conine and Edgar and Livan and Sheffield. And for every player that I recall fondly there are also the ones that I have no recollection of like Cunnane, McMillon, and Sheff.

And yes that is Josh Booty in the set as well – No ‘Knuckler’ included…

1996 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice Florida Marlins Team Set w/Bonus Cards

1996 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice Florida Marlins Team Set w/Bonus Cards

I’m having a lot more luck finding affordable Marlins team sets from the early days of the franchise versus more recent times.

And that is just fine for this collector, as the Marlins of the 1990’s are the teams that I really got attached to.

This set was issued in 1996 and is the Upper Deck Collector’s Choice set.  I have the 1994 and 1995 versions, so this one accompanies those other two very well.

On to the cards:

1996 UD CC A

1996 UD CC B

1996 UD CC C

When I bought this one, I was very excited to find all of the ‘extra’ cards that were included with the set.  Not only did I get the full team set of the 16 Marlins that made an appearance in the set, but I got every card from every subset in that issue that also featured a Marlins player.

The Red, White, and Blue ‘Rookie Class’ cards are fantastic.  And you know that I gotta show some love for the Andre Dawson ‘Tribute’ card!!

Florida Marlins 1996 Donruss Team Set

Florida Marlins 1996 Donruss Team Set

It’s amazing how this team set looks nothing like the team of players that would go on to win the World Series title just one season later.

Yes, some of the pieces were in place, but not enough to truly remind me of ‘my team’ that won the championship just one season later.

Here is the set:

Kind of funny, but Andre Dawson’s card looks a lot more like that of a coach than a player.  1996 was Dawson’s final season in the majors, and he played in 42 games that year.  The least that Donruss could have done was give us one final card showing Dawson at the plate or in the field.

It does have me wonder what kind of coach Andre could be.  He has stated publicly that he has no intention of becoming a manager – but I know one thing:  He would not accept any of the crap that some of today’s ‘stars’ bring to the game.

Go Get ‘Em Hawk!!!

1996 Topps Florida Marlins Team Set

1996 Topps Florida Marlins Team Set

I am cruising right along as I work to collect every Topps-issued Marlins team set issued during the team’s history.

This is the first ‘small’ set, as it features much fewer cards than the team sets issued in 1993, 1994, and 1995.

What also stands out to this Marlins’ fan is that while this set was the one issued prior to the team’s 1997 World Series title, the players included in the set hardly remind me of the roster that would win it all just one year later…

On to the cards:

My favorite card from the set?

Of course my favorite card from the set is the one that features Andre Dawson.  Duh…

This was The Hawk’s final major league season.  I really like that Topps used a photo of Andre at Wrigley Field for this final card.
