30-YOC’s Opening Day Contest Winner Is…

YOUNG BLEED

On a night in which pitching ruled, and with a guess of 217 strikeouts, YOUNG BLEED was just 1 strikeout off the actual number of 218.   That’s some pretty solid guess work right there!!!

Congratulations to YOUNG BLEED!!!

Here is one more look at the prize:

The 2014 Major League Baseball Season Is Here. Let’s Play Ball!!!

The 2014 Major League Baseball Season Is Here.  Let’s Play Ball!!!

Finally we get to hear those two words we’ve been wanting to hear since November – ‘PLAY BALL’!!!

I am very excited that the 2014 baseball season is here. The Marlins are hosting the Colorado Rockies tonight in a rare night game and I am going to make every effort possible to it from start to finish.  Hopefully my two boys will want to watch a bit of it as well.  And with Jose Fernandez on the mound, it is even more exciting as the Marlins have a true ‘Ace’ on the mound!

As a kid, I always wanted to go to an Opening Day game, but there was no team in Florida during my youth. And as an adult, I guess that work and other priorities have gotten in my way as I have still not been able to conquer that dream.

I promise that one day I will!!!

Until then, ‘PLAY BALL’!!!!

Time To Play ’30-Year Old Cardboards’ 5th Annual ‘Opening Day Contest’!!!

Time To Play ’30-Year Old Cardboards’ 5th Annual ‘Opening Day Contest’!!!

As we all eagerly wait for the 2014 baseball season to begin, I want to start it off right.

And one way to accomplish that is to host a contest!!!  This is the fourth straight season in which I am hosting an ‘Opening Day Contest’.

Here is how it will work:

There are 13 games scheduled on Opening Day, Macrh 31.  You can review the schedule, and see the starting pitchers by clicking here.  To win this contest, you need to guess how many total strikeouts will be thrown in these 13 games.  To enter, simply leave a comment on this post with your pick.  Once a number is taken, it cannot be used again.  The person who gets the closest, without going over, to the actual number of strikeouts tossed wins!!!

Opening Days brings out the sport’s top pitchers.  From King Felix to Chris Sale to Jose Fernandez – there will be a ton of K’s.  So, do your homework and make your selections now!!!

The winner of my ‘Opening Day Contest’ will win this:

That’s right – 3 packs of 2014 Topps Opening Day baseball cards!!

Sound good??  Wanna play??

Then do your homework and make your picks.  All selections must be made by 8:00 PM EST on Sunday night.  I will post a list of the players and their picks on Monday morning.

Good luck everyone!!!

PACK BREAK: 3 Packs Of 2014 Topps Opening Day

PACK BREAK: 3 Packs Of 2014 Topps Opening Day

Finally, after going to three different retail locations in the last 24 hours, I have been able to find the Topps 2014 Opening Day product.

Target had six packs left.  Yep, six.  So, I snagged them all.  I figured that for the effort I put in, I deserved all of them.

But, in actuality, I am only keeping three for myself and will be using the other three for an ‘Opening Day Contest’ prize that is set to launch on Thursday night.

So, three for me, and possibly three for you!

And now, let’s get on with in and let me show you the 21 cards that I pulled from the three packs.

Pack #1 – I got a nice Jake Marisnick rookie card, a Kevin Gausman Future Stars card, and a sweet mascot card.

Pack #2 – Not bad, a Tulo 3D card and a Blue-bordered card of Jordan Zimmerman

img068

Pack #3 – Easily the most star-studded pack!  I pulled Puig, Kemp, Cano, Ryan Zimmerman, and the Giancarlo Stanton 3D card!!

Now a bad haul.  And with the price tag of just $0.99 per pack, I am digging it.

I have some work ahead of me to get the rest of the Marlins players in the set, but it is a challenge that I gladly accept.

And don’t forget, the remaining three packs can you be yours if you enter my ‘Opening Day Contest’.  Come back on Thursday to check it out!!!

Thanks for reading.

Poor Execution

Topps’ Opening Day baseball card set was released today.  Yet, Opening Day is not for another two weeks.  Kind of odd, right??

I am one of the few collectors that I know that truly enjoys this set.  I like the theme and I love the added ‘Opening Day’ graphics.

But, it is the timing that really gets me.  Sure,  I understand why Topps may release the set prior to Opening Day.  Maybe it is to get the collectors and fans more excited about the upcoming season.

But, if I had my choice, this set would be issued after Opening Day, and it would be much larger in volume.  Today, the set consists of 220 cards, an average of 7 cards per team.  But in reality, many teams get well over 7 cards and some get well under that mark as well.  My preference would be that the set is expanded to feature each and every player that was on the starting lineup for Opening Day for their teams.  Each team would get 9 cards, adding another 70 cards to the set.  And it would be perfect if the images were snapped from the actual ‘Opening Day’ and the set was issued a few weeks after.

Enough said.

What do you think?  What Is The First Things When You Think Of When You Hear ‘Topps Opening Day’?

Let me hear it!!

Million Dollar Question – Does Opening Day In Australia Excite You??

Million Dollar Question – Does Opening Day In Australia Excite You??

No build-up is necessary for this one – a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ question.

And my answer is simple – No.

Baseball is America’s past-time.  People in America take off the day from work and skip school to attend Opening Day.  I don’t know how popular our game is in Australia, but I do not believe that it ranks very high.

Am I for making the sport more appealing in other countries?  Sure.  But, not at the expense of the fans it already has?  I don’t know if these games between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks count has home games for either team, but one of these two fan bases is losing home games and a chance to be at Opening Day.  And that sucks.

Why on Earth would MLB advocate this???  SMH.
