Happy Birthday Mark Grace!!

Happy Birthday Mark Grace!!

Amazingly, Mark Grace turns 50 years old today!!  That’s right – I said 50!

One of my favorite Cubs players of all-time, Mark Grace was so much fun to watch. It’s not often that you get to witness watching a player have fun day in and day out during his playing days. But with Mark Grace, that is exactly what you got!!

A guy with an incredible swing and defensive skills to match, Grace was an all-around baseball star. While never the most celebrated player on his roster, Grace was certainly the most consistent. His approach at the plate was consistent enough to yield him more hits than ANY other player in the decade of the 1990’s – WoW!!!

For Mr. Grace’s birthday I want to get him a flag. Not just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill flag though… I want this one to be special. I want it to be White in color with Blue letters and numbers. And while we’re at it, let’s slap his name and #17 on it and hang it from a pole in the outfield at Wrigley Field(a place Gracey called home for 13 amazing years)!!

Happy Birthday Gracey!!!

Did You Know…

During the decade of the 1990’s, no batter in the National League had more hits that Mark Grace.  Grace paced the NL with 1,754 hits in the decade.  He was trailed by Tony Gwynn and his 1,713 hits.

Mark Grace 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia ‘Tools Of The Trade’

Mark Grace 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia ‘Tools Of The Trade’

I like most of the cards that came out of the 2004 & 2005 ‘Tools Of The Trade’ sets.

And with the exception of a few questionable player/team combinations, I think that Playoff put together a very solid set and design for us with these issues.

And this Mark Grace card, from the 2005 set, is no exception.

Have a look:

Just a fantastic looking baseball card that captures Mark Grace and his Chicago Cubs uniform perfectly.

This card is serial numbered as 107/150, and I paid just fifty cents for it!!  And I am glad that I did!!

I couldn’t resist this one – and I have a bunch of these.  From Dawson to Jenkins to Brooks to Morgan.  I have to say that this set of game-used relic cards is one of my favorites from recent years.

And to be honest, I have to say that he Purple used on this card of Mark Grace looks fantastic – even if Purple is not a traditional baseball color…

Great, Great, Great photo choice too!!!

Mark Grace 2005 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

Mark Grace 2005 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

My favorite Cubs’ first baseman of all-time, I love scooping up new cards of ‘Gracey’ whenever I can.

This one came courtesy of a ’30-YOC’ loyal reader – Gerad!

Patterned after the 1988 Topps design, this card features a very young-looking Mark Grace.  Probably taken during one of his first Spring Training sessions with the Cubs, there is no mistaking the field his is posing on as Wrigley Field.

This card makes a great addition to my unofficial collection of Mark Grace.  I wonder if he has any other issues in these ‘Fan Favorites’ sets as I love, love, love them!!

Thanks Gerad!!

Mark Grace 2009 Upper Deck SP Legendary Memorabilia Game-Used Jersey Card

Man, I love Mark Grace!!  Had he not been playing during the time that production of baseball cards exploded, he would surely be on the ’30-YOC’ roster.  In fact, his collection would probably be complete…

So, while I don’t officially collect his cards, I still do shop for them from time to time.

And this time, time was on my side.

Check out my latest purchase featuring #17:

Sweet, huh? Numbered 40/125, this card looks fantastic!  And the gold framing around the piece of Grace’s jersey makes the card look fantastic!!

2005 Leaf Chicago Cubs ‘Clean Up Crew’ Starring Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, and Ryne Sandberg!!!

2005 Leaf Chicago Cubs ‘Clean Up Crew’ Starring Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, and Ryne Sandberg!!!

Now this card here is an instant classic for me, and for that matter, any fan of the Chicago Cubs during the late 1980’s!!!

If you were to poll any Cubs’ fans during that time as to who their favorite player on the team was, the odds are pretty good that the names most frequently mentioned would be Dawson, Sandberg, and Grace.  In fact, if you tallied all of the results from that poll, I would put money on the three of them ranking as 1-2-3 in the final count.

This card really takes me back to the 5 years that I lived in the suburbs of Chicago.  These three players entertained me so often during that time – I kind of feel like I grew up with them.  The Cubs’ were a permanent fixture on my TV back then, and with so many games starting early in the day, I was able to catch quite a bit of daytime baseball back then.

Obviously I am going to add this card to my Andre Dawson collection, but for any fan of the Cubs, or for baseball in the 1980’s for that matter – this would make a great addition to all of our collections!
