Finally, I Got My Signed Billy Williams Chicago Cubs Mini Batting Helmet. Come Check It Out!!!

Finally, I Got My Signed Billy Williams Chicago Cubs Mini Batting Helmet.  Come Check It Out!!!

For more than 24 months I have been seeking out this item.

And I tried multiple routes – from organized signings to consignment deals to purchasing online to Ebay.

And no matter how I tried to get this going, I failed.  Either the timing was not right, the pricing was way too high, or a reason to pass was strong.

Ever since I started building a collection of signed mini-helmets for my collection, I have wanted to add Billy Williams to it.  The Ebay search was save in ‘My Ebay’ for more than 24 months.  And with it came a lot of over-priced, but beautiful, items for me to drool over.

Many were priced too high, and none of the sellers were willing to listen to my offers.

So, I played the waiting game.  And I waited an awful long time…

But, just like most of my ‘big-ticket’ conquests, the wait eventually paid off and I scored!!

I am now the proud owner of this mini-helmet:

Signed perfectly by the Hall of Famer, this helmet is a fantastic addition to my collection.  And it rests comfortably next to my Andre Dawson and Fergie Jenkins helmets.

Patience pays off again.  And I certainly did not have to risk quality on this one – she is a beauty!!!

Billy Williams 2001 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Certified Autographed Baseball Card

Billy Williams 2001 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Certified Autographed Baseball Card

You will not believe what I paid for this card.  Seriously, you will not believe me…

It has been more than a year since I added a signed Billy Williams card to my collection.  It is has nothing to do with availability, and everything to do with focus.

But, when I saw this one, I was not going to let it get by me.  Especially with the price tag that was on it…

Have a look:

This card comes from the 2001 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ set, and as you can see it features a perfect Billy Williams signature.

I have always been a fan of this set, as the images used are bright, bold, and lead from the card’s surface.

This card is a great addition to my Billy Williams player collection.  I am thrilled to bring home another autograph of #26.

Oh, as for the price???  Just $6.00!!  I could not believe it – the seller must have needed cash quick because he/she listed a bunch at very cheap prices.  I was able to grab this one before anyone else!!

2006 Fleer Greats Of The Game Certified Autographs – Dawson, Jenkins, and Williams!!!

2006 Fleer Greats Of The Game Certified Autographs – Dawson, Jenkins, and Williams!!!

Oh man.  Oh man.  Oh man.  Oh man.  Oh man.  Oh man….

My three favorite Cubs – and all autographed to perfection!!

I am so excited to finally have all three of these cards – I am a little speechless.

Let’s get right down to it and show them off…

Awesome, huh??  Yeah, I know!!

I have got to find a Ron Santo to add to this collection!!!!

Billy Williams 2001 Fleer ‘Greats’ – Autograph!!!

Billy Williams 2001 Fleer ‘Greats’ – Autograph!!!

Roughly three weeks ago I hooked myself up while cruising around Ebay.  I found a seller that was unloading a big stack of 2001 Fleer ‘Greats’ autographed cards – and at very low prices…

In total, there were probably 8-9 cards that I was very interested in.  Ultimately I settled in on 4 of them – and I paid just $22.00.

Card #3 from that buy is this card of Billy Williams.

I see this card all of the time on Ebay.  And never really ready to pull the trigger, my patience paid off as I landed this sweet card for just $6.00.

A great card featuring a nice action of photo of the ‘Sweet Swinging’ Billy Williams, I have to wonder how much more that autograph would pop off of this card if it had been done in Blue.

But oh well, beggars cannot be choosers, and I am so excited to finally add another Billy Williams signed card to my collection!

Pack Addict Lends A Hand Towards The Cause!!!

Pack Addict Lends A Hand Towards The Cause!!!

My pal Dan, aka Pack Addict, answered the call during my plea for help in completing my Greg Maddux and Darryl Strawberry collections.

Specifically, Dan offered up 2 cards of Darryl Strawberry – 1988 Fleer & 1988 Donruss.  The cards have arrived and they look great.  I can’t believe that these bad boys are both 22-years old!!!

And to top it off, he also threw in a 1969 Topps RBI League Leaders card featuring 2 of my favorite Cubbies – Billy Williams and Ron Santo.  Now this cars is a classic, and having Willie McCovey as the other superstar being featured is the icing on the cake!!!

Thanks again Dan.  2 great additions to my Darryl Strawberry player collection as well as another multi-player card from the 1960’s starring some of my favorite players!!!

New Reading Material #3 – “Open” – Signed Copy Of Andre Agassi’s Autbiography

My wife did great on this one!!!

I followed the careers of Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras during their playing days.  They were my generations version of Connors and McEnroe and they made men’s tennis relevant in the United states during the 1990’s.

I knew that this book was published and released in the Fall of 2009, I just hadn’t made it a priority to get.  My wife took care of that for me and I am suddenly eager and energized to learn more about Agassi and what fueled his well-publicized career.  From being a child prodigy to marriage to Brooke Shields to drug use to marriage to Steffi Graf to retirement from the sport, I hope ‘Open’ lives up to its title and provides an unseen look into the life of one of the most iconic sports figures of my generation.

And here’s the autograph!!!

Happy Anniversary Billy Williams!!

On this day in 1961, Billy Williams was awarded with the Rookie of the Year award in the National League.

In that ’61 campaign, Williams starred in 146 games for the Chicago Cubs.  And once he earned that starting job in left field, he kept it for fourteen years!!!

During his ROY season, Williams hit .278 while collecting 147 hits.  In a display of his all-around offensive skills, ‘Sweet Swinging Billy Williams’ connected for 20 doubles and 25 home runs.  He also scored 75 runs while driving in 86.  And amazingly, as a 23-year old rookie, he only struck out 70 times in 584 plate appearances.

Happy Anniversary Mr. Williams!!!

RESULTS: Ron Santo Book Signing!!!

You may recall that a few weeks ago I sent Ron Santo a copy of his autobiography and asked him to sign it for me.  You can re-read that post here if you’d like to.

Last night when I got home, there was an unmistakable package in my mailbox and my Ron Santo book was home.

In just 3 short weeks, Ron Santo obliged my autograph request and signed his book for me.  And not only did the great people at Major Memories, the company that works with Santo, process my request quickly, but they also sent over a Certificate of Authenticity which can double as a bookmark.

On to the photos…

Another Thank You has to go out to Ron Santo who has provided some great autographs to me and my growing collection!!!  Thanks!!!

Creating My Own Ron Santo Book Signing!!

Something tells me that Ron Santo is no longer out promoting his autobiography.  What makes me come to this conclusion?  Well, it’s because his book was released in 1993…

You may recall that I recently picked up this book for a relatively inexpensive price.  I have every intention of reading this book but I have 1 more in front of it to read first.  And since I have already collected signed autobiographies of former Cubs legends like Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, and Andre Dawson, I thought it would be fitting to try to get this book signed by My. Santo.

So off it goes.  The book is now in the USPS mail stream preparing to make a stop in Illinos and then to be returned back home to me.  Hopefully Mr. Santo will do me the honor of signing and personalizing this book for me as it will be another great addition to my rapidly growing collection of signed baseball memoirs!!!

Stay tuned to ’30-Year Old Cardboard’ as I will post the results from this ‘book signing’ as soon as the book is returned to me…

Results: Fergie Jenkins Book Signing!!!

My signed copy of Fergie’s new autobiography was delivered last night!!!

And just like the first book, this one is a beauty.

Fergie Jenkin’s life story is a fascinating one, and those thoughts extend well beyond his professional baseball career.  Fergie is my favorite pitcher of all-time, and once you learn more about his personal life from before, during, and after his playing days, you will find it hard to not have more respect for this baseball legend than you did prior to opening his book.

I have a few books liked up ahead of this one that I want to read, but I may have to shuffle them around a bit as now that I have possession of this book, I don’t know if I can put it on the side…

Here are a few pictures of my newest Fergie Jenkins acquisition.

Too Sweet!!!  A special ‘Thank You’ goes out to the great people at Anderson’s bookstore in Naperville, IL.  And a very special ‘Thank You’ goes out to Fergie Jenkins for making this fan’s day!!!
