Did You Know…

The last player to hit over .400 during a complete major league baseball season and not win the batting title was Ty Cobb.  In 1922, Cobb hit .401 but he finished in second place for the batting crown to George Sisler’s mark of .420.

Ty Cobb set the American League record for total bases in a single game with 16.  On May 5, 1925, Cobb connected for 3 home runs, a double, and two singles touching 16 bases in total.

Since 2000, the team with the most inductees into the Baseball Hall Of Fame is the Boston Red Sox.  The Sox have had three former players inducted since 2000 – Carlton Fisk in 2000, Wade Boggs in 2005, and Jim Rice in 2009.

Did You Know…

Rusty Staub is the only major league player to have played 500 or more games with at least four different teams.  During his career, Staub played in 500 or more contests for the Houston Astros/.45s, Montreal Expos, New York Mets, and Detroit Tigers.

Cal Ripken Jr. has grounded into more double plays than any other player in major league history.  During Ripken’s career, he grounded into 350 of them!!

Did You Know…

Ty Cobb was the youngest player to win Major League Baseball’s Triple Crown Award.  In 1909, at the age of just 22, Cobb batted .377 while also accumulating nine home runs, and 107 RBI.

The next youngest Triple Crown winner was Mickey Mantle who at 24 years of age in 1956 accomplished the feat.

Did You Know…

The 1987 Minnesota Twins are the only World Series champions to be outscored in the regular season.  Despite scoring only 786 runs while allowing 806, the Twins finished the 1987 regular season with a record of 85-77, two games ahead of Kansas City in the AL West and then shocked the favored Detroit Tigers in the ALCS and beat St. Louis in seven games for the title.  Their .525 winning percentage is the lowest ever for a World Series champion.
