‘Wednesday’s Word Association’ – When I Hear The Term “Phenom”, I Think Of…

The last post about the Giancarlo Stanton & Jose Fernandez card got me thinking about the great young stars in the league.  And these guys have been called every name/term in the book.

One word that always sticks is ‘Phenom’.

So, tonight’s ‘Word Association Wednesday’ is When I Hear The Term “Phenom”, I Think Of…

And my answer is not the most obvious, but he certainly deserves the attention that the work ‘Phenom’ receives.  I go with Stephen Strasburgh.

From a young age, Stras has been compared to all of the right-handed greats.  Leading up to his drafting as the #1 MLB pick, he had all eyes on him.  And as he dominated the college ranks, the number of fans grew immensely.  And now, as one of the bright, young stars of the game, Stephen Strasburg is poised to elevate his game to the next level – to put himself on par with the best in the game.  He is ready to transform into that ‘Phenom’.

So, When You Hear The Term “Release Date”,  What Is The First Thing That You Think Of??

2013 Topps Archives ‘Tallboys’ Subset – Stephen Strasburg

2013 Topps Archives ‘Tallboys’ Subset – Stephen Strasburg

With the new 2013 Topps Archives baseball card set release, the ‘Mini Tallboys’ subset is easily one of the best parts of the issue.

The cards from this subset offer a very basic, but throwback feel that screams vintage. The set is 40 cards deep and offers a nice mixture of current players, stars from the 1980′s, and Hall of Fame legends.

This is the Stephen Strasburg card from the set:

STRASBURG

I have watched a lot of baseball this season.  And of all of the players that I have watched and wished that they had better results, number one on the list is Stephen Strasburg.  Stras has pitched well, but the run support that the Nationals have given him in his starts has not helped.  His ERA hovers right around 3.00 on the year, and his strikeout and walk numbers are right where they should be.  Stras should have 13-14 wins by this time, but it is likely that he ends the year with less than ten.  Yes, ten!

The ace of the Washington Nationals has a new home.

Panini America announced on Tuesday that it has signed Stephen Strasburg to an exclusive autograph deal.

Terms of the multi-year agreement were not disclosed. The right-hander was previously a Topps-exclusive player beginning in 2010, when he captivated the baseball world with his dominating debut that was later derailed by injury.

“Stephen Strasburg is one of the most dominant pitchers in the game today; and one of baseball’s most popular and collected players,” said Panini America CEO Mark Warsop in a prepared release. “His exclusive presence in our licensed MLBPA trading card releases is a huge development for us and will add even more excitement to our roster of products. We’re honored that Stephen has entrusted us – exclusively – to represent and protect the integrity and collectability of his autographed trading cards.”

Strasburg, a 15-game winner last season, will have his first autographs in 2012 Prizm, which arrives in April. There, he will appear in his USA Baseball uniform. Panini also has the USA license locked up exclusively.

Strasburg appears on 942 different baseball cards from his career valued at more than $24,700. He appears on exactly 150 certified autograph cards.

“I’m excited to announce my relationship with an innovative company like Panini and deliver my autographs to baseball collectors exclusively in Panini trading card products,” Strasburg said. “I’m looking forward to working with Panini and joining the ranks of their other exclusive athletes for trading cards.”

Strasburg is the company’s first exclusive baseball player. He joins the likes of Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving from the NBA and Andrew Luck of the NFL, who is a Panini Authentic(memorabilia) autograph-exclusive player.

Stephen Strasburg Picked For 1st Opening Day Start

Stephen Strasburg Picked For 1st Opening Day Start

VIERA, Fla. (AP)—Stephen Strasburg has been picked by the Washington Nationals to make his first opening-day start, on April 5 at the Chicago Cubs.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson made the announcement Tuesday, a day after the 23-year-old had his best outing of spring training. He allowed one run and two hits in five innings against the New York Mets, striking out three and walking one.

Newcomer Gio Gonzalez will follow Strasburg in the rotation, starting April 7 in Chicago. Johnson didn’t reveal the rest of his rotation, but it currently is lined up to have right-hander Jordan Zimmermann pitch the third game, followed by right-hander Edwin Jackson. If healthy, right-hander Chien-Ming Wang would be the fifth starter.

Stephen Strasburg – Take Two

Stephen Strasburg will make his long-awaited debut with the Nationals on Tuesday. Sound familiar?

Technically, it’s only the phenom’s season debut, since he appeared in 12 games for the Nationals last season. But after Strasburg missed a year due to Tommy John surgery, there may be nearly as many eyes on this debut as his first big league appearance a year ago. Certainly, it’s been a long time coming.

“The bottom line is to go out there, get your innings in, build up the arm strength, go into the offseason healthy,” Strasburg said earlier this week. “I’m not going to put any expectations on myself. I’m not going to win a Cy Young in four starts. I’m just going to try and help this team win some ballgames.

“It was my goal [to come back this season]. Besides that, I wanted to go into the offseason healthy. It looks like at this point, both are going to happen.”

Strasburg is expected to pitch five or six innings on Tuesday against the Dodgers, who have dropped two straight after rattling off a season-best six consecutive wins.

Last year, Strasburg went 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA before undergoing elbow reconstruction in September. He was on a rehab assignment by August, going 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA in six games. Tuesday’s start — against Los Angeles southpaw Ted Lilly — will be Strasburg’s first big league game since Aug. 21, 2010, against the Phillies.

Strasburg-Mania Coming To Miami!!!

Strasburg-Mania Coming To Miami!!!

With so much attention being paid both locally and nationally to Wade, Bosh, and LeBron coming to Miami, this event has kind of fallen off of the radar in regards to ‘water-cooler’ talk.

What event, you ask?

Well, tonight Stephen Strasburg is bringing his talents to South Beach.  He’s facing the Florida Marlins for the first time – and I cannot wait to watch the game.  Normally I would have tried harder to get tickets and attend this game in person, but some other priorities arose prior to the starters being named for this contest so I will settle for watching it in the comforts of my home.

But this game, and the hype surrounding Strasburg has me wondering what other players draw people to the ballpark these days.  How many players in the MLB really bring people out to see them play?

Barry Bonds during his prime?  Mark McGwire during the chase to 61?  Hideo Nomo during his rookie campaign?  In today’s game, I would think that Strasburg is the #1 attraction – with everyone else being a very distant runner-up.  I cannot recall the last time I heard someone say that they were excited that Pujols or Lincecum or Manny was coming to town…  Sad, but true…

The Marlins will typically draw somewhere between 13,000-15,000 for a Friday night home game.  I am very eager to see what they announce as the paid attendance for tonight’s game!!!

Go FISH!!!
