Did You Know…

Jason Bay, the 2004 National League Rookie of the Year, was the first Canadian-born player to win the award.  He was also the first member of the Pittsburgh Pirates to win the honor.

My take – while it is not too surprising that Bay is the first Canadian to win the award, I was not aware that he was the first Pirate to do so.  The ‘Bucs’ have had some incredible rookie talent come through their organization of the years.  Guys like Pie Traynor, Ralph Kiner, Barry Bonds, Willie Stargell, Dave Parker, Roberto Clemente, and Bill Mazeroski are the guys I can name off of the top of my head.  It’s pretty surprising to me that Bay was the lone Pirate to bring home the Rookie Of The Year Award.
