1940 HEADLINE: Indians’ Bob Feller Tosses No-Hitter On Opening Day!!

You read that right, 1940.  Today marks the 70th anniversary of Bob Feller’s Opening Day no-hitter.  He is the only pitcher in major league history to toss a ‘N0-No’ in the season opener.

Battling the Chicago White Sox on the road, and in front of 14,000 fans, Feller and his Indians teammates reigned victorious as they beat the Sox 1-0.  The obvious star of the game was Feller, who dominated the Sox through all 9 innings!

Happy Anniversary Mr. Feller!

2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-12 – Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians

2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-12 – Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians

I really like the ‘Mound Dominance’ subset that Topps included in their 2012 base set.  The cards are sharp, the graphics are solid, and I am a sucker for cards that pay homage to a historic baseball event.

The ‘Mound Dominance’ set recalls 15 amazing pitching performances in major league history.

This is card#12 – Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians

BOB FELLER

The Dominant Day – August 23, 1936.  In the first major league start of his career, Bob Feller threw a no-hitter.  He was dominant right from the start, striking out 15 batters while allowing four walks.

Feller was just 17-years old when this occurred – truly remarkable!!!

Progress – 12/15

Did You Know…

By the age of 23, Bob Feller had already captured 107 career wins in the big leagues.    By the end of the 1941 baseball season, Feller had a record of 107-54.  He then enlisted in the Navy where he spent the next four years.  Upon returning to the major leagues in 1946, he won 26 games.

A true gamer!!!
