Dave Winfield 1990 Fleer Update

Take a look at this mighty swing:

I love it.

And while I can appreciate how large Dave Winfield looks on this 1990 Fleer baseball card due to the card design and cropping of the image, I do wish that we got to see more of the action – especially the bat!

I want to know if he mad contact.  I want to know if it was fair or foul.  And I really want to know what kind of cleats ‘Big Dave’ was wearing back in 1990 when he was playing for the Angels.

I want the details.  Give me the detes…

Thank you, ‘Big Dave’.

Dave Winfield 1985 Topps Glossy All-Star

Gotta love it – Another great card for my Dave Winfield collection!

This one comes from the 1985 Topps baseball card set.  The All-Star Glossy cards were inserted into rack packs of 1985 Topps and were counted as bonus cards for the set.

Have a look:

I have always enjoyed the theme of All-Star cards – these players stand out and deserve the extra attention.  In many sets, I wish that the cards were done better and did a more solid job of celebrating the All-Star, but I will take what I can get.

And this time, I got another great card for my growing Dave Winfield collection.

Yeah, Baby!!

1993 HEADLINE: Dave Winfield Joins The 3,000 Hits Club

On this day in 1993, Dave Winfield joined the ‘3,000 Hits Club’.

Playing for the Twins and at home, Winfield entered this game with 2,999 hits on his resume.  With just 3 weeks left in the season, this was a match-up of a 6th and 7th place team so it was a relatively small crowd of just over 14,000.  But for those that showed up, they got to witness baseball history!!  Winfield collected 2 hits in the contest, both singles, in this 13-inning marathon.  Hit #3,000 came off of fellow Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley in the 9th inning.

Baseball History – Winfield finished his career with 3,110 hits.  He presently ranks in 19th place on the all-time list.

1979 HEADLINE:  Carl Yastrzemski Joins The ‘3000 Hits Club’

On this day in 1979 Carl Yastrzemski collected hit #3000 of his amazing baseball career!!!

On the road and taking on the New York Yankees in front of 34,000+ Yankee fans, Carl Yastrzemski and the Boston Red Sox made this game a memorable one.  Winning easily 9-2 against their divisional foes, ‘Yaz’ and the Red Sox enjoyed both team and individual success on this historic day.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, ‘Yaz’ connected for a single off of Yankees’ pitcher Jim Beattie.  Hit #3,000 was 19 years in the making, but Carl Yastrzemksi’s dedication to the game and the art of hitting certainly helped earn him a spot in this legendary club.

Congrats ‘Yaz’!!
