Uncle Moe Delivers A Perfect Stack Of Cards!!!

Uncle Moe was the second reader of my blog to respond to my ‘Help Me Complete My Greg Maddux And Darryl Strawberry Collections‘ post.

He offered up a 1986 Donruss Highlights card of Darryl and I quickly accepted and provided him with shipping instructions.

Well, the card has arrived and it’s a great one.

But, Uncle Moe did not stop there.  He sent me a handful of cards of the guys that I collect.  He was generous and spread the wealth as he sent me some more Strawberry cards as well as a few Eddie Murrays a Dave Winfield an Andre Dawson and some Maddux cards as well.

And if that was not enough, he also sent me 3 Andre Dawson Zellers cards too!!!  These are sweet and vintage – exactly my taste!!  The cards are part of either a 9 or 12 card set put out by Zellers department store out of Canada.  Produced sometime in either the late 1970’s or early 1980’s, the cards feature a young Andre Dawson from his days playing for the Montreal Expos.

Thanks Uncle Moe – you really outdid yourself on this one!!!

And for any of you that have not visited his blog, you should take the time to do so.  He and his son are on a mission to collect the entire 2008 Topps set – SIGNED!!!  That’s right, their goal is to obtain each and every of the 990 cards from the base and update sets and have all of them autographed.  Amazingly, he is closing in on #200 already!!!

Cards From A Loyal Reader Aimed At My Player Collections!!!

A few weeks ago a reader of ’30-YOC’ named Jon told me that he had some cards for me that would be better suited in my collection than his own.  Always being curious and grateful, I accepted his offer and the cards were delivered quickly and safely to me.

On to the good stuff:

A 1992 Donruss Darryl Strawberry.  While not featured with the Mets in this set, this card is still a great addition to my collection.  I like the design, and the Blue used on the card’s borders and graphics compliment Darryl’s new Dodger uniform.

Up next is a 1992 Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Sportflics card featuring Hall of Famer Jim Palmer.  My scanner was able to catch Palmer right in the middle of his wind-up.  Cool!

Here we have 4 modern-day Greg Maddux cards from his second stint with the Cubs.  The photo on the ’04 Donruss Playoff Honors cards is perfect.  But my favorite of the bunch has to be the 2006 Topps Heritage card.  It screams vintage – I LOVE IT!!!

And last, but certainly not least – 3 Eddie Murray cards that were on my ‘needs’ list.  This collection is very close to completion, and Jon gave me 2 of the last 4 cards I needed!!!

Thank you Jon.  This was a very generous gesture by you and I am working on something special for to show my appreciation!!!

SportLots.com Has Been Very, Very Good To Me!!!!

Being a player collector is hard work.  Being a player collector of players that are no longer active may be ever harder.

Luckily, I enjoy the challenge!!!

When it comes to obtaining cards for my player collections, I have been able to secure cards in a vast number of ways.  Trades, baseball card shows, baseball card stores, and through Ebay auctions have been tools I have used to build my collections.

But the #1 way I have been able to build these up is through www.sportlots.com.  This website has offered me a very affordable, organized, and easy way to find the cards I crave.  While Ebay may be fancier with its hi-res images and powerful buying tools, I find most of the singles on Ebay to be over-priced.  Sportlots.com offers a different and somewhat tougher shopping experience but the result is saving quite a bit of money while also finding cards in a more organized manner.

Here is my latest purchase from 3 different sellers on the site.

In this stack of 51 cards, I have been able to take some big bites into my current player collections.  We have Eddies, Darryls, Palmers, Madduxs, and of course Dawsons!!

As a result of this purchase, I’ve got a bit of organizing to do as well as some player checklists to update.

If you haven’t checked out their site, I suggest logging onto www.sportlots.com to see the shopping experience that they offer.  It’s not for everyone, but it certainly works for this player collector!!!

**Hat-tip tp Brad from Rickey Henderson Collectibles for advising me to check out this site as I was building my now completed Rickey Henderson collection.  Thanks Brad!!!

My ‘Player Collection’ Page Has Been Updated!!!

Finally.  After an exhausting effort I have completed the 4 checklists needed to get my new player collections ready to go.  Right now you can see where my starting points for these 4 collections are by clicking here.  And as always, I will keep this list as a ‘Top Page’ on my blog and will make my best effort to keep the page updated regularly.

It took quite a bit of time, and a ton of double and triple checking, but I believe I have a solid start to these 4 new collections.

So, stay tuned and be prepared because I am about to go on a full fledged mission as I go after cards for my Eddie Murray, Darryl Strawberry, Jim Palmer, and Greg Maddux collections.

Let’s go shopping!!!

New Player Collections = Lots Of Time & Work!!!

Please don’t think for a minute that I’m complaining, because I’m not.  I just forgot how much work went into creating the checklists needed to get my new player collections up and running.

Building the template in Excel is the easy part.  The time consuming part is compiling the list of cards.  And even though I know exactly what I want to have in these player collections, obtaining the needed data to build my master checklist involves quite a bit of research.

I try to get it right the first time.  Using tools like Ebay and Sportslots.com gets me very close to where I need to be.  But from there the task becomes more of a challenge to ensure that each and every card that fits the criteria of my ‘PC’ is met.  Thankfully, I can rely on the Internet for most of my answers…

As of right now, my Jim Palmer checklist is completed.  My Darryl Strawberry list is 90% of the way there, and I still have Greg Maddux and Eddie Murray to go.

Stay tuned because I am ready to shop.  Once these four checklists are complete you can expect quite a bit of activity from me as I jump right into my new player collections!!!

Man I’m ready to shop!!!

Some New Player Collections I Will Be Working On

Over the course of my first year back into the hobby of collecting baseball cards I completed three very important player collections – Andre Dawson, Dave Winfield, and Rickey Henderson.  These 3 players were among my favorites as a kid and I think I did a pretty good job in honoring them and their careers by building these sets.

I have also been fortunate to add a handful of new Billy Williams cards to my collection which has gotten me closer to completing his set too.  And then there is Fergie Jenkins.  I cannot tell you how much this collection means to me.  I did not have a single card of Mr. Jenkins 1 year ago, and today I am just 4 cards away(1966-69) from completing that set as well.  I hope that I will be able to inch closer to completing each of these sets in the future.

That brings me to this point.  I want to go after a few more players that are special to me.  And again, 1 of my pre-requisites is that I have no desire to collect many modern cards or players.  I want to keep to my passion – which is baseball and baseball players from the past.

So with that, I bring you 4 new players I will be collecting now.  I still have a ton of work to do in regards to building checklists and organizing the cards of these guys that I already own, but that is part of the fun with this.  Pretty soon I will be up and running and my ‘Player Collection’ page will be updated with my new goals.

And they are:

maddux photo

Greg Maddux – Just Cubs cards.  Maddux played for the Cubs from 1987-92 and then rejoined the team for the 2004 & 2005 seasons.  My goal is to get all of the base cards from the major companies issued during these years as a member of the Chicago Cubs.

Eddie Murray – Orioles Only!!  I have picked up a nice stack of Murray cards at the last 2 cards shows I have attended.  He is one of few players that looks great on each and every card so I plan to get them all.  Actually, just the one of his as an Oriole as this is the way that I remember him and his career.  Lucky for me his last season in Baltimore was 1988 and I believe his last cards of him in an O’s uniform was 1989.

Palmer photo

Jim Palmer – Easily my second favorite pitcher from the 1970’s.  I have learned more about Mr. Palmer and his amazing career than possibly any other player in the last year.  He was an awesome pitcher and I think this will be a very fun player collection to go after.  That rookie card may be pretty tough though…

straw photo

Darryl Strawberry – Just the Mets!!  I loved Straw as a kid.  His power at the plate was incredible and his speed on the base paths for a man of his size was something to see.  And even though he played for 4 different teams during his playing days, I only think of him as a Met – so that is all I will collect of him!!

There you have it.  4 incredibly different players – but all guys that have made an impact on the sport of baseball and my love for vintage baseball cards.

I will do my best to get checklists and my Player Collection page updated quickly so you can follow my journey with these 4 new collections I am going after!!!  Enjoy.
