Cards From Ortega – Part 1 – Billy, Fergie, and Andre – Oh My!!!

He did it again.  The gifts keep coming from Alfredo of the blog ‘My Past Time, I Love It’

And what a great trio of cards they are.  All Donruss Diamond Kings.  All Chicago Cubs Legends.  All Players that I Love!!!

‘Sweet Swinging’ Billy Williams, Ferguson ‘Fergie’ Jenkins, and ‘The Hawk’ Andre Dawson.

And if you thought that was good, wait until you see card #4 that will be posted on the blog tomorrow!!!  Stay tuned.  And thanks again, Alfredo!

1983 Donruss Diamond Kings Rickey Henderson

1983 Donruss Diamond Kings Rickey Henderson

I’ve always found the Diamond Kings cards from the early 1980’s to be disturbing.  I agree that these are nice pieces of art, but for some reason they freaked me out when I was a kid and I admit that they still do today(just a little bit though).

If it weren’t for the fact that I needed this card for my Rickey Henderson collection it probably wouldn’t have made it into my hands.

At least this one looks like Rickey, and I must admit that I like the action shot of him as he takes a giant lead off of 1st base!!

Tearing Into A Pack Of 1990 Donruss – Pack 2

I received 4 packs of 1990 Donruss in the contest I won on the Autographed Cards blog.

Here are the results from Pack #2

Greg Briley, Chris Carpenter, Ed Whiston, Mike Fitzgerald, Dave West, Mike Scioscia, Alejandro Pena, Paul Molitor, Dwight Smith, Danny Tartabull, Tim Leary, Howard Johnson, Norm Charlton,  Eric Hetzel, Gary Thurman, and a Diamond King Checklist.

I was thrilled to see a Dwight Smith card hiding in this pack.  It’s been a long time since his successful debut with the Cubs in 1989!!!

Stocking Stuffer #1

My wife hooked me up with 3 SWEET Andre Dawson game-used cards for Christmas….

How nice is this?  Numbered 99/100, this card features a piece of game-used jersey and bat from ‘The Hawk’.  On the jersey card, you can just make out a pinstripe on the extreme left of the piece.  I love this card – I already owned the base version and this is certainly a great compliment to it.

Dave Winfield 1987 Donruss Diamond King

Dave Winfield 1987 Donruss Diamond King

There are certain players that look great in paintings.  The artists are able to carry over enough of the player’s facial features to make it appear that the painting is actually a photo.

In the case of Dave Winfield, the artist has not been able to do this, and the result is a terrible looking baseball card of one of the game’s great players…

1988 Donruss Andre Dawson

1988 Donruss Andre Dawson

How sweet is this 3-card set from the 1988 Donruss issue?  I am a big fan of the ‘bonus’ cards that card companies issued of the major stars in the 1980’s.  This is no exception.  I like the base card, but the Diamond King and MVP card make this trio a ‘must-have’ for any Andre Dawson collector!!

1982 Donruss Dave Winfield – Diamond Kings

1982 Donruss Dave Winfield – Diamond Kings

As a kid I always enjoyed Donruss’ Diamond Kings cards.  I found them to be a nice break from a boring set that lacked creativity.  They were always an added bonus when one of your favorite players was featured in this small sub-set.

But, this Winfield card is very disturbing to me…  Yes, I know it’s Winfield and I recognized him right away.  I just cannot stop staring at this card as it’s really bothering me.  I don’t know if it’s his eyes or maybe his grin or maybe his teeth or maybe the position of his head in this portrait but I find this to be a terrible looking card!!!

I guess you can’t get them all right, huh????
