Baseball Card Show Purchase #3 – 2004 Donruss Elite – Elite Team – New York Mets

Baseball Card Show Purchase #3 – 2004 Donruss Elite – Elite Team – New York Mets

I love cards that celebrate team success – and this card does exactly that…

And of all of the teams that I enjoyed watching during my youth, the first one that actually won something was the 1986 New York Mets.

So when I saw this card, I had to grab it!!  Not only does it celebrate that same team that I have so many memories of watching as a kid.  But it also features my three favorite Mets, and three guys that I have built player collections of – Gary Carter, Darryl Strawberry, and Dwight Gooden!

Oh, and the card is numbered 871/1500…

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #1 – 1980 Topps

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #1 – 1980 Topps

Now that my Gary Carter collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #1 is from the 1980 Topps set.

Here it is ladies and gentlemen, the #1 card in my Gary Carter collection.  Numero Uno!!

I am, and have always been, a big fan of the 1980 Topps baseball card set.  And while it is far from the most exciting issue created by Topps, it’s simple yet distinct design elements work very well for a baseball theme.

The two banners containing the player’s position and team name act as perfect frames that hold the photo centered.  And while the banners are not exact matches for the team colors in any of the cards from this set, they are hardly a distraction.

And now check out that picture of a young and aggressive Gary Carter.  Right in the middle of the action, Carter is holding his head and the ball high after apparently making an out.

And the cloud of dust surrounding him is just perfect!!!

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #2 – 1987 Topps

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #2 – 1987 Topps

Now that my Gary Carter collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #2 is from the 1987 Topps set.

You have no idea how close this card was to being at the #1 spot for my ‘Fab 5′.  If I could, I would call this one, 1A.  Yes, I like it that much.

The 1987 Topps design is a sweet one – that topic has been covered on this blog time and time again.  So, let’s get right to the highlight of the card – THAT PHOTO!!!
A truly amazing shot, capturing Carter in perfect form.  We all know exactly what is going on in this picture, and the fact that the photographer captured a perfect shot of Carter as he fires one at a second base in hopes of catching the baserunner illustrates the action perfectly.

On top of that, the Mets’ team colors work very well against the wood grain background.  From the team logo to the Orange nameplate bearing Carter’s name, it all looks great on this 1987 Topps card.

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #3 – 1983 Topps

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #3 – 1983 Topps

Now that my Gary Carter collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #3 is from the 1983 Topps set.

Just a tad better than the 1984 Topps baseball card that I featured yesterday in my ‘Gary Carter Fab 5’, card #3 comes from the 1983 base set.

The card, like the ’84 version that followed it, features two images.  And again, Topps opted for a large action photo(which was a great choice) and then a smaller cameo shot.

Here it is:

Wow, just look at the determination on Carter’s face and in his body language as he attacks the baseball in what appears to either be a passed ball or bunt attempt.  Either way, he is committed to making the play, and if I had to put money on it I would be comfortable with betting that he made the out.

Great job Gary!!!

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #4 – 1984 Topps

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #4 – 1984 Topps

Now that my Gary Carter collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #4 is from the 1984 Topps set.

As you all know, the 1984 Topps baseball card set is a favorite at ’30-YOC’.  Offering us two images, 1 action and 1 cameo, the cards look fantastic and were a it with collectors.

The coloring that Topps chose for the cards works very well too – just look at how the Expos nameplate that runs vertically along the left border blends right with Carter’s striping on his Expos uniform.

And that cloud of dust at Cater’s feet is just icing on the cake.  But I really don’t recommend eating dirt flavored icing – I’ve been there and it is not pretty…  🙂

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #5 – 1981 Donruss

Gary Carter ‘Fab Five’ – Card #5 – 1981 Donruss

Now that my Gary Carter collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #5 is from the 1981 Donruss set.

While the card lacks any real originality, it does capture a great action photo of Carter as he tears into a pitch.  And based on the part of his swing that was captured by the photographer along with his head position, it looks like Mr. Carter has made some serious contact with the offering.

This card’s image is perfect, and is a great example of the time period that it was taken in.  First off, we have those incredible Expos Powder-Blue uniforms.  Following that up is their unmistakable batting helmet that I love.  And lastly, we have Carter’s hair stuffed under his helmet – a testament to the era when players were allowed to be and appear as individuals….

My Gary Carter Player Collection Is Finally Complete!!!

My Gary Carter Player Collection Is Finally Complete!!!

It took almost eight months to complete, but the journey took me through memory lane a few times.  And I enjoyed it each and every step of the way!!

The two biggest reasons that I wanted to put together a collection that honored Gary Carter is that (1) he was a member of the old Expos teams that I enjoyed watching and (2) he was a key part of the 1986 World Series winning New York Mets – the first World Series champion that I have vivid memories of watching.

Gary Carter is considered to be one of the greatest catchers of all-time, a very solid contributor to the sport for two decades.  I hope that my collection of every major brand card from his time with the Expos and Mets does his Hall of Fame career justice.

As always, now that the collection is complete I will unveil my ‘Fab 5’ cards featuring Gary Carter.  That week-long series will start next Monday so get ready for it!!!

Here is a picture of the complete Gary Carter collection!!!

Thanks.
