1954 HEADLINE: Willie Mays Makes The Greatest Catch In Baseball History!!!

1954 HEADLINE: Willie Mays Makes The Greatest Catch In Baseball History!!!

On this day back in 1954, Willie Mays made ‘The Catch’.

Often considered to be the greatest defensive play in baseball history, this outstanding catch still gets ‘air-time’ every year.  The fact that this catch happened in front of a national audience during the baseball playoffs only added to its legend.

One could certainly argue that more amazing catches have been made since, but this is ‘The Catch’ that still stands out amongst all others.

Happy Anniversary Mr. Mays!!!

Did You Know…

Willie Mays was the first player in major league history to connect for 300 home runs, steal 300 bases, and reach the 3,000 hits milestone in the same big league career.

You know me, I like to collect subsets.  And the ‘Glove Stories’ subset issued in this year’s Gypsy Queen set has been considered an option due to the great action it offers.

I did not know that this set was issued in ‘mini’ format but when I saw this card I immediately grabbed it.

This is the card of Willie Mays from the set.  As you can see, he is making ‘The Catch’ that was made famous in the 1954 World Series.

Check it out:

In time, I will go after this whole set.  And after seeing this mini version, I may have to snag the minis as well…

Saving the best for last – Almost…

I have never owned a Willie Mays baseball card.  Sure, I have a few League Leaders cards that feature him, but those are multi-player cards.

This is my first ever true Willie Mays baseball card:

WHOA!!!  Nice, huh?

While not perfectly mint, it is a card of Willie Mays!!!

And while it features Willie in a Mets uniform and not the Giants, it is a card of Willie Mays!!!

And while it also features an old Mays, it is a card of Willie Mays!!!

I am super-stoked to have this one in my collection!!!!

YES!!!!

Happy Anniversary Willie Mays!!!

I like Willie McCovey.  I collect Willie McCovey.  I respect Willie McCovey for his accomplishments as one of the greatest sluggers in the history of this wonderful sport.

As for Willie Mays, what can I say?  He is simply, the most well-rounded baseball player to ever put on a uniform.  And when I speak/hear/learn about him and his career, I soak it all in…

I cannot believe that these were sitting in the $0.10 bin.

Without hesitation, I grabbed all of them.

Oh, and these are also the first cards I have ever owned of Mr. Mays.  Regardless of their issue date, his presence is needed and now belongs in my collection!!!

Happy Anniversary Willie Mays!!!

On this day in 1973, Willie Mays hit the final home run of his career – #660!!

At Shea Stadium, in front of a crowd of more than 36,000 fans, the New York Mets hosted the Cincinnati Reds.  And in the bottom of the 4th inning, Willie Mays connected for the final home run of his amazing Hall of Fame career.  It was a solo shot off of Reds’ pitcher Don Gullett.  The Mets went on to lose the game 2-1.

Willie Mays had an amazing baseball career.  As one of the game’s most well-rounded players of all-time, smashing home run #660 was just another in the very long list of amazing accomplishments by the ‘Say Hey Kid’!!!

Did You Know…

Willie Mays is one of only nine players to have two 50-homer seasons, but his seasons were unique in that they came an entire decade apart – he belted 51 homers for the 1955 New York Giants and 52 for the 1965 San Francisco Giants.

My take – the book was written in 2006, so the numbers may be a little outdated.  Still, quite an accomplishment by Mays – it proves his longevity as a dominant power hitter!
