Happy Birthday Josh Johnson!!!

Happy Birthday Josh Johnson!!!

Josh Johnson turns 30 years old today.

One of my favorite former Marlins pitchers, Josh Johnson is preparing to start the 2014 major league baseball season as the ace of the San Diego Padres.  And he has all of the tools to succeed and lead the team.

But, his health has certainly stalled his progress.

After starting 31 games during the 2012 baseball season with the Marlins, JJ started just 16 in 2013 with the Blue Jays.  In order to take on a larger role with the team, as well as earn a longer contract and bigger payday, Johnson needs to start 28+ games for the Padres and keep them in contention deep into the games that he starts.

As someone that has gotten to see JJ pitch countless times, both live and on television, I have thought that he has had ‘ace’ stuff for some time.  His ability to dominate games from the onset, while allowing very few runs in the process, is rare.

I am hoping for a strong start to the 2014 baseball season for JJ, and an equally strong finish.

Happy Birthday Josh!!!

UncleMoe Takes Me Fishing!!!

UncleMoe Takes Me Fishing!!!

With the recent release of 2012 Topps Allen & Ginter issue, I have been patiently waiting to see who has pulled some Marlins cards that they may be willing to part with.

I picked up three packs of the stuff myself, scored 1 Marlins (make that former Marlin in Gaby Sanchez), but the rest of the stuff became available to my readers.

Well, pretty soon after I offered them up, one of my blogging-buddies “UncleMoe” told me that he threw two fish in the mail for me.

And they arrived yesterday.

And amazingly, you can ship fish from Arizona to Florida, without ice, and they are still fresh!!!

Have a look:

Two great ones that go towards building my team set.

Thank you Moe, I owe you two!!!!

PREMIERING TONIGHT – The Franchise, Starring The Miami Marlins

PREMIERING TONIGHT – The Franchise, Starring The Miami Marlins

I have not looked forward to the debut of a television show like this for a very long time.

You better believe that I will be glued to the TV tonight at 10:00PM.

Here is a preview:

I cannot wait!!!

I’ve Got Tix!!!!

I’ve Got Tix!!!!

It took me a lot longer than I wanted, but due to some prior plans, birthday parties, and a family vacation, I have been unable to make the trip to the new Marlins Park.

Well, that all changes now.

I have finally scored two tickets to a game at Marlins Park, and they are for next Saturday evening against the Washington Nationals!!!

And I cannot wait.

Sure, I want to check out my team and cheer them on as they battle the first-place Nationals.  But, I am just as excited to see the new ballpark.  I have heard great things, and I have been wanting to check it out for myself.

My wife is eager to check out the new ballpark too, and we’re going to bring her camera and zoom lens so I can capture as much of the stadium and game action as possible.

Next Sunday, you can expect lots and lots of pictures!!!

‘Uncle Moe’ Sends Over A Marlins-Themed Stack Of Baseball Cards

‘Uncle Moe’ Sends Over A Marlins-Themed Stack Of Baseball Cards

I believe that ‘Uncle Moe’ and I have a unwitten rule.  He gets my Diamondbacks and I get his Marlins – it is that simple.

I am certain that there are other relationships out there is the card-blogging arena that exist as well.  Heck, I have a few other myself.

But none has been as long-standing as the one I have with the man that they call ‘Moe’.

This time around, he hit me with a bit of a surprise too.  Sure, there were plenty of Marlins to enjoy, but he also sent over a pair of cards that feature a certain Hall of Famer that I really like as well.

So, enough of the chit-chat, let’s see the spoils!!!

Pair of Dennis Eckersley 2012 Topps inserts:

Josh Johnson 2011 Topps Diamond Stars:

Anibal Sanchez 2012 Topps Archives – a perfect complement to the Hanley, Reyes, Heath Bell, and Josh Johnson cards that I already owned:

4 cards from the 2012 Topps – 1 from series 1, and 3 from series 2:

Carlos Zambrano 2012 Topps Series 2 – Red Border:

Hanley Ramirez 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen – Gold Border:

Jose Reyes 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen ‘Sliding Stars’:

Some pretty sweet stuff in there, huh??

Yeah, I am really digging these cards.

Of the lot, my favorite is the Jose Reyes card. While a obviuos air-brush job (Reyes cut his hair prior to suiting up for the Fish), I like the theme of the subset.  The ‘Eck’ Mound Dominance card is pretty fantastic as well!!!

Thank you Moe!  And if you’re reading this, take a few minutes to see what he is doing on his blog, it is a great, and fun, read.  Click here.

Reader Gerad Sends Over Three Cards For My 2012 Topps Heritage Miami Marlins Team Set!!!

Reader Gerad Sends Over Three Cards For My 2012 Topps Heritage Miami Marlins Team Set!!!

The readers of this blog continue to amaze me with their generosity.

This time around, it was loyal reader Gerad that offered up a fe treats.

3 to be exact – and all are needs for the 2012 Topps Heritage team set I am building of the Miami Marlins.

Check them out:

1st – NL Home Run League Leaders card featuring Giancarlo Stanton among some other names you may know…

2nd – Matt Dominguez rookie card

3 – Jose Reyes

I will have to check the official checklist, but I believe that this means that I have completed the base part of the set.

Now, on to the short prints – and there are a lot of Marlins SP’s to go after!!!

Thank you again, Gerad.  I will have some ‘Cards’ for you soon.

Scooped This Up At Wal-Mart Last Night On A Quick Errand Run…

Scooped This Up At Wal-Mart Last Night On A Quick Errand Run…

I had to make a quick trip to Wal-Mart list night to grab some stuff for a party at my son’s school this afternoon.

And as quick as I had to make that trip, I was able to squeeze in a few minutes to scan the baseball card area located near register #21.

I saw a lot of new stuff, and  a lot of stuff marked with clearance tags too – mostly 2011 baseball and some basketball stuff.

And then I saw this:

Somehow, it ended up in my shopping cart.  So, I just paid for it and brought it home with the rest of the items I needed to get.

The set is a 17-card set, and it features some players that are not included in the 2012 Series 1 Marlins team set.

I really want to rip it open and check them out.  But something is telling me to keep it sealed…

Decisions, decisions….

Baseball Card Show Purchase #2 – 5 Cards For My Marlins 2012 Topps Heritage Team Set

Baseball Card Show Purchase #2 – 5 Cards For My Marlins 2012 Topps Heritage Team Set

From what I can see at the show, not too many of the dealers there are busting new product.  If they are, they don’t even waste time selling their common cards – just the high-end stuff.

But, there is one dealer that still brings boxes of his commons.  And he usually has all of the new releases with him.

And since I want to build the 2012 Topps Heritage Miami Marlins team set from scratch, I dug into his box of them.

And I ended up scoring five new cards for the set.

And I paid just a quarter for each!!!

Miami Marlins 2012 Topps Opening Day Team Set & Inserts

Miami Marlins 2012 Topps Opening Day Team Set & Inserts

I have been a Marlins mood for a while now – and a lot of my recent pick-ups are centered around my favorite baseball club.

I recently scooped up a very nice stack of modern-era Marlins team sets from a seller on Ebay.  The card cover both the Florida Marlins era and the new Miami Marlins era.

The first set that I want to show off is the 2012 Topps Miami Marlins Opening Day set.  In total, I was able to grab 14 cards from the set, and I am thrilled with the turnout.

Have a look:

Here is the seven card ‘base’ set that features Heath Bell, Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, Anibal Sanchez, and Mike Stanton.

And my favorite mascot, ‘Billy The Marlin’.

There are two Marlins’ players featured in the ‘Elite Skills Player set – Jose Reyes & Mike Stanton.

And three Marlins in the ‘Fantasy Squad’ set – Jose Reyes, Mike Stanton, and Hanley Ramirez.

And lastly, Hanley is als part of the 3-D Opening Day Stars set.

Pretty nice start to what will be a fun set to collect.  And I am more than 60% done!!!  I still need to find the Blue bordered cards that are a nice compliment to the base 7-card set.  And there is one autographed card of Chris Coghlan that I will try to scoop up too…

Thanks for reading.
