1983 HEADLINE: Brooks Robinson & Juan Marichal Elected To Baseball Hall Of Fame

On this day in 1983, both Brooks Robinson and Marichal were voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Brooks Robinson is known for his glove first, and with 16 consecutive years of Gold Glove level performance it is clear to see why. On offense he has collected 2,848 hits, 268 home runs, 1,357 RBI, 1,232 runs scored, and a lifetime average of .267.  And the Orioles teams he played for did well too.  He is a member of the 1966 and 1970 World Series championship teams.

Juan Marichal is one of the many pitchers that defined the fantastic pitching era of the 1960s and 1970s.  Known for his famous leg-kick, Marichal dazzled while on the mound.  His efforts landed him 243 wins with 52 shutouts to his credit.  Marichal was a 9-time All-Star which says a lot of the respect he had around the league considering that he was fighting for roster spots with Seaver, Carlton, Ryan, Jenkins, and others.

Brooks Robinson was voted into the Hall of Fame on his first ballot.  He captured 344 of 374 votes case, good for 92%.

Juan Marichal was voted into the Hall of Fame on his third ballot.  He captured 313 of 374 votes cast, good for 83.7%.

Juan Marichal 2001 Topps Archives

With the 1974 Topps Jim Palmer card on my mind, I rummaged through my Topps Archives cards to see if I had any more cards that honor the 1974 Topps design.

And I found this beauty of Mr. Juan Marichal!!!

Another great effort here – just outstanding!!!  And look at that leg-kick – simply perfect!!!

Happy Birthday Juan Marichal!!!

Happy Birthday Juan Marichal!!!

Juan Marichal turns 74 years old today.

In photographs, I find Juan Marichal to be one of the most polarizing pitchers ever.  An extremely photogenic player, Juan and that incredible wind-up will stop you dead in your tracks whether you are looking at pics on the web, flipping through pages of a magazine, or in my case diving through boxes of baseball cards.

I don’t know that much about Marichal, but from the several books that I have read, he is regarded very highly by some of the greatest hitters and pitchers from his era – and that goes a long way with me.

Happy Birthday Mr. Marichal!!!

Juan Marichal 2000 Topps – ’50 Years Of Topps’

If you’re going to issue a re-print, make it a good one!

And that is exactly what Topps did when they issued this card of Hall of Famer, Juan Marichal with their ’50 Years Of Topps’ set issued in 2000.

The card, a re-print of the 1962 Topps set, looks fantastic.

And that Gold logo commemorating Topps’ 50 years sets the card off is grand style…

Shuffling through hundreds and hundreds of cards is fun to do.  And while it is impossible to truly recognize each and every card that passes from one hand to another, there are certain things on a card that will catch your eye…

Bright colors, horizontal images, die-cut borders…  And for me, cards that look like picture frames always catch my eye.

And that is how I landed all five of these great cards from the 2007 Upper Deck SP Legandary Cuts set.

Not a bad group of guys, huh??  Bob Feller, Steve Carlton, Rod Carew, Juan Marichal, and one of my main men, Johnny Bench!!

NICE!!!

Juan Marichal 1970 Topps All-Star

Juan Marichal 1970 Topps All-Star

These All-Star cards from the 1970 Topps set are very possibly my favorite set of All-Star cards ever issued.

Brilliantly designed, and plain fun to look at, I cannot believe that I was able to bring this card of Juan Marichal home for just $0.99.

And you know me.  If I see a bargain, and it is of a guy that I like – I am going to pounce!!!

This card celebrates Marichal’s 1969 baseball season – and it was spectacular!!  During that season, Marichal started 36 games while compiling a 21-11 record.  Amazingly, he threw 27 complete games that year, 8 of which were shut-outs.  He also racked up 205 strikeouts while walking just 54 batters.

The 1969 baseball season marked Juan Marichal’s 8th appearance as an All-Star.  He would go on to make the squad one more time, in 1971.

And the back of the card is pretty sweet too!!

Signing Results:  Hall of Famer Juan Marichal

Juan Marichal did an autograph signing in the middle of December and the sponsor of the signing offered up a pretty sweet deal on the autograph website that I belong to.

So, I took the bait.  And here I am, the very proud owner of a beautifully signed baseball by the member of the Hall of Fame class of 1983.

Take a look:

Marichal is a very highly respected pitcher from the 1970’s.  And while most if not all of the attention went to guys named Seaver, Ryan, and Palmer during that decade, Juan Marichal had the respect of his teammates and opponents – because he was that damned good.

I read a lot.  I read a lot of baseball books.  And my favorite era to read about is the 1970’s.  And I can tell you that each and every hitter that I read about speaks about how tough he was to face.  And the pitchers from his time?  They were all envious of his amazing stuff.

I am thrilled to add signed baseball number 44 to my collection – signed by the legendary Juan Marichal!!!

Juan Marichal 1971 Topps

Juan Marichal 1971 Topps

I couldn’t pass this one up.  And while it is kind of a fun card, even though it offers us a posed image, what I really like is that it is a different shot of Marichal than what most of his cards featured during his playing days.

You see, Juan Marichal was/is very famous for his amazing leg kick during his wind-up.  And, he is so famous for it that most of his cards captured that image for their issues.

So, here on this 1971 Topps card, it is kind of nice to see Juan close up….
