1985 Topps #1 Draft Pick – Al Chambers

1985 Topps #1 Draft Pick – Al Chambers

Al Chambers had a very brief major league baseball career.  And although he played for the Seattle Mariners for three seasons, he only appeared in 57 games.

While with the Mariners, he split time between the outfield and designated hitter.  And in those 57 games, Chambers collected 25 hits, 2 home runs, and 11 RBI.

Quite a bust for a #1 pick, huh????

Happy Anniversary Mike Greenwell!!!

On this day in 1996, Mike ‘Gator’ Greenwell put on a display of baseball super powers that can only be described as phenomenal.

In front of 24,000+ fans in Seattle’s Kingdome, Mike Greenwell single-handily beat the Seattle Mariners by a score of 9-8.

In the game, ‘Gator’ went 4-for-5 and was responsible for driving in all of Boston’s 9 runs.  How did he do it you ask?

Here’s how:  In the fifth inning he blasted a 2-run home run(2).  In the 7th he belted a Grand Slam(6).  In the 8th he connected for a 2-run double(8).  And in the 10th inning he hit a single which allowed for the go-ahead run to score(9).

There you have it – 9 RBI and most importantly the hit that helped win the game for the Red Sox.

Happy Anniversary ‘Gator’!!!
