Happy Anniversary Bill Buckner & Mookie Wilson!!!

Happy Anniversary Bill Buckner & Mookie Wilson!!!

On this day in 1986 you made the most famous error in baseball history.  Although many 1st baseman prior to you have seen ground balls accidentally roll through their legs, none was on a bigger stage than your error in game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

Errors occur all of the time in baseball.  But, in the bottom of the 10th inning with runners in scoring position and the game tied the impact of this accident was magnified.  Mookie Wilson’s ground ball would have been handled by Buckner with ease the next 100 times without question, but with the pressure on, it was Buckner that failed and Wilson that prevailed.

I remember watching this game as an 11-year old.  I was pulling for the Red Sox and wanted to see Wade Boggs win his first ever World Series title.  What I ended up seeing was baseball history of another kind that has no equal within the last 30 years.

This error made Bill Buckner and Mookie Wilson one of the most famous pairings in baseball history!!

Happy Birthday Mookie Wilson!!!

Mookie Wilson turns 58 years old today.

Mookie Wilson’s major league career spanned 12 seasons, spent in both New York and Toronto.

As a player, Mookie was a run-scorer!  In 12 seasons, he scored 731 runs, with his career high of 91 coming during the 1983 baseball season.  His great speed was also used for getting him into position for scoring all of those runs.  Mookie amassed a solid number of doubles and triples, with 227 and 71 respectively.

Wilson is probably best known for the base hit that led the New York Mets to a win in Game Six of the 1986 World Series.  That hit, and play, is baseball history and Wilson was the catalyst.

Bill Buckner’s 1986 World Series ‘Error Ball’ Sells For $418,250.00

Associated Press – Dallas, TX

The baseball that rolled through the legs of Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner in the 1986 World Series has been sold at auction for $418,250.

Heritage Auctions says the ball was sold Friday in Dallas to a buyer who wants to remain anonymous. The sale price includes the buyer’s premium.

The ball was the centerpiece of an auction featuring the collection of Los Angeles songwriter Seth Swirsky.

Buckner’s error in Game 6 allowed the New York Mets to rally with two outs in the 10th inning. The Mets went on to win the series.

An umpire gave the ball to Mets executive Arthur Richman. Charlie Sheen bought it for more than $93,000 in 1992. Swirsky purchased it for nearly $64,000 in 2000.
