Happy Birthday Jeff Conine!!!

Happy Birthday Jeff Conine!!!

Jeff Conine turns 48 years old today.

Jeff Conine has been affectionately given the tag of ‘Mr. Marlin’ by the team’s fans. A testament to his playing days in South Florida, Conine’s performance and winning ways as a member of the Florida Marlins has solidified him as their most decorated player and one of it’s favorites.

A member of both World Series championship teams in 1997 and 2003, Conine was a key cog in the Marlins franchise for 8 seasons. Today, Conine holds a position as an instructor with the team and also does some television work for the local channel that covers ‘The Fish’.

For his birthday, I think it would be fitting to give Mr. Marlin the honor of the first retired jersey in franchise history. I know that these types of honors are normally held for players of a Hall of Fame type caliber, but Conine is certainly the most accomplished Florida Marlins player(so far)!!!

Did You Know…

During the 1995 Major League All-Star Game, Marlins’ outfielder Jeff Conine became just the 10th player to hit a home run in his first All-Star Game at-bat.

Jeff Conine 1996 Leaf Signature Series – Certified Autograph – Bronze

Jeff Conine 1996 Leaf Signature Series – Certified Autograph – Bronze

I don’t have too many certified autographs of any Florida or Miami Marlins players.

Actually, I believe that with the acquisition of this card below, this now makes four.

Yes, FOUR!!!

And they’re both from the same set – 1996 Leaf Signature Series.

My latest addition is the Bronze card of Mr. Marlin himself, Jeff Conine.

Here it the card:

As for the other three, they’re all of Andre Dawson – the bronze, silver, and gold versions of this same card.

Do I want to get some more Marlins certified auto’s?  Sure.  But with the high turnover that the team has I have a hard time sinking any cash into today’s guys.  Maybe a Sheffield or Mike Lowell card can be next…

Stay tuned.

Jeff Conine Autographed 1993 Topps Baseball Card

Jeff Conine Autographed 1993 Topps Baseball Card

This one was sent over by reader Gerad, a very loyal ’30-YOC’ follower.

The surprise was found in my mailbox yesterday, and the note attached said that he could not pass it up and send it over.

The card features Jeff Conine, an original Florida Marlins baseball player.  And in 1993, the team’s first season, Conine was the star!!

Check out the card, and the sweet auto:

Conine lays down a pretty lazy auto – The J & C are ok, but the remainder is tough to make out.

By the looks of it, the photo was shot in an older part of Miami, maybe Little Havana or somewhere close.  Either way, it is a very unique backdrop for a baseball card…

Thanks Gerad!  I owe you one.  Actually, more than one…  🙂

Sending An Autograph Request To Jeff Conine

When I moved back to Florida in 1994, I quickly jumped on board with the Florida Marlins.  You see, I moved from Florida to Chicago in 1989, but when I left Florida did not have a professional baseball team(or basketball or hockey either).

Having a ‘home’ team this time around in Florida has been great and I have been hooked on ‘The Fish’ ever since.  I’ve been able to enjoy some incedible baseball that has been capped off by 2 World Series Championships!!

Without a doubt, the most popular player and biggest star with the fans is Mr. Marlin himself, Jeff Conine.  I was thrilled to get the chance to meet Jeff Conine at the 2009 Marlins Fan Fest.  How sweet is it that we sat together in the dugout that he called home for 8 seasons?  I cannot begin to explain the feeling of sharing the bench with a player that has been in that same spot for hundreds of baseball games – it was electric!!!

I am going to send this picture to Mr. Conine with a request that he signs it for me and my son.  He was extremely friendly to us at the Fan Fest and I hope our luck continues with this.
