Happy Birthday Phil Niekro!!!

Today, Phil Niekro turns 75 years old!!!

Still being seen around Spring Training facilities, Phil Neikro has had baseball pumping through his blood for more than 50 years. A Hall of Fame pitcher with 24 major league seasons under his belt, Niekro put on a pitching seminar through the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s. With a career record of 318-274, one has to wonder how many more victories Niekro would have notched if he had played on some of the better teams from his playing days.

In 24 seasons, Niekro only made it to the post-season twice, and neither time was to the World Series.

Happy Birthday Mr. Niekro!!!

2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-9 – Phil Niekro, Cleveland Indians

2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-9 – Phil Niekro, Cleveland Indians

I really like the ‘Mound Dominance’ subset that Topps included in their 2012 base set.  The cards are sharp, the graphics are solid, and I am a sucker for cards that pay homage to a historic baseball event.

The ‘Mound Dominance’ set recalls 15 amazing pitching performances in major league history.

This is card#9 – Phil Niekro, Cleveland Indians

PHIL NIEKRO

The Dominant Day – June 22, 1986.  On this day, Phil Niekro pitched a 2-hit gem for the Indians at the age of 47.  Both hits were given up by Niekro in the first inning, but from there on he was superb.  The pitching line looks like this: 9 innings pitched, 2 hits allowed, 1 earned run, 4 strikeouts, 0 walks, and a win!

This 2-hitter was the 16th time that Niekro went the distance in his career while allowing either 1 or 2 hits.

Progress – 9/15

Did You Know…

The major league pitcher to capture the most wins after their 40th birthday is Phil Niekro.  Niekro won 121 games after his 40th birthday in 1979.  Jamie Moyer is second on the list with 103 wins after he turned 40.

Phil Niekro 2012 Topps Series 2 ‘Mound Dominance’

Phil Niekro 2012 Topps Series 2 ‘Mound Dominance’

I hate to say it, but when I think of mound dominance, I don’t really think of Phil Niekro.

No, when I think of dominant pitchers, my mind goes to Bob Gibson and Juan Marichal and Ferguson Jenkins and Dwight Gooden.

Maybe it is because I picture Phil Niekro as a grey-haired pitcher with little velocity.  Or maybe because even at his ‘best’ Mr. Niekro was probably never tagged as ‘dominant’.

Crafty, yes.  Determined, certainly.

But Dominant, I don’t believe so…
