Adding A Few New Player Collections To The ’30-YOC’ Roster!!!

Adding A Few New Player Collections To The ’30-YOC’ Roster!!!

I sit here having completed a few player collections in the last few weeks and with a few more that will get completed in the very near future.

So, I wanted to take some time and review the collections that I have completed since getting back into the hobby in the last two years.  And after doing so, I see so much that I still want to go after.

With that, here are the 5 new player collections I will begin working on:

Joe Morgan – My favorite member of the ‘Big Red Machine’, Morgan did it all as a player.

Gary Carter – ‘The Kid’ has grown on me quite a bit in the last few years.  I value his consistency and ability to play so well with so many different pitching staffs.

Tony Perez – Perez was such a solid player – and a huge contributor to the Reds’ success.  His ties to the Florida Marlins don’t hurt his cause either…

Wade Boggs – Boggs is the guy that indirectly taught me how to read a box score.  I loved following his daily success at the plate when I was a kid.

Ozzie Smith – Ozzie personified fun on the field.  I think that collecting him will be a lot of fun!!!

And there you have it.  5 Hall of Famers, and 5 guys that I will have a lot of fun collecting!!

I have already added some cards of these players to my collection prior to making them official.  But now, the commitment has been made and I am ready to proceed – full steam ahead!!!

My updated checklist has been posted to my ‘Player Collections’ page, and I am ready to go.

Let’s do this!!!!

Dude, Those ’83s Are Wicked!!! And A Bonus Too!!!

Dude, Those ’83s Are Wicked!!!

Sorry, I couldn’t resist throwing a little 80’s slang into that one…

My buddy Alfredo sent over a nice stack of 1983 Topps cards that suit my collecting style perfectly.

In total, he sent over 7 cards, and each of them is of a player that I have a fondness for.

The first 5…

All Hall of Famers Baby!!!  2 Gary Carters, a Reggie Jackson, a Johnny Bench, and Mr. Frank Robinson!!

And the last 2 also fill voids in 2 of the player collections I am working on…

Perfect additions to my player collections – the 1983 Topps All-star cards of Dale Murphy & Tim Raines.

And if that was not enough, Alfredo also threw in an added bonus.  Kind of like that extra ‘Sham-Wow’ that they give you.  He tossed in a real gem:

Nice, huh??  A 2002 Upper Deck ‘The People’s Choice’ Game-Used jersey card of Mr. Tim Raines!!!  Just look at the smile on Raines’ face – he is so happy to be with me!

I owe you big time for this one buddy!!!

Focusing On My New Player Collections Has Really Paid Off!!!

To say that I have attacked my 4 newest player collections is a bold yet true statement.  It has been a ton of fun going after these guys, and it has been equally enjoyable to look back at some of the amazing things these baseball superstars did during their major league baseball careers.

I thought this would be a good time to review where I have come from since I took on the challenge of collecting the following:

  1. Jim Palmer – All major brand issues from his playing days
  2. Darryl Strawberry – All major brand issues from his days with the New York Mets
  3. Greg Maddux – All major brand issues from his first stint with the Chicago Cubs
  4. Eddie Murray – All major brand issues from his days with the Baltimore Orioles

Ok, on to the numbers…

Player Started With Currently Own  Left To Go % Done
Jim Palmer 0 19 24 44%
Darryl Strawberry 4 11 43 20%
Greg Maddux 3 21 25 46%
Eddie Murray 10 32 11 74%

Looks like I have to go to the grocery store and pick up some Strawberries huh???

Stay tuned as I look to make some big dents in these player collections over the next few weeks.  I’ll keep you updated each, and every step of the way!!!!

As always, you can track my collections and check out my ‘Needs’ by clicking on my ‘Player Collection’ page too.

My ‘Player Collection’ Page Has Been Updated!!!

Finally.  After an exhausting effort I have completed the 4 checklists needed to get my new player collections ready to go.  Right now you can see where my starting points for these 4 collections are by clicking here.  And as always, I will keep this list as a ‘Top Page’ on my blog and will make my best effort to keep the page updated regularly.

It took quite a bit of time, and a ton of double and triple checking, but I believe I have a solid start to these 4 new collections.

So, stay tuned and be prepared because I am about to go on a full fledged mission as I go after cards for my Eddie Murray, Darryl Strawberry, Jim Palmer, and Greg Maddux collections.

Let’s go shopping!!!

New Player Collections = Lots Of Time & Work!!!

Please don’t think for a minute that I’m complaining, because I’m not.  I just forgot how much work went into creating the checklists needed to get my new player collections up and running.

Building the template in Excel is the easy part.  The time consuming part is compiling the list of cards.  And even though I know exactly what I want to have in these player collections, obtaining the needed data to build my master checklist involves quite a bit of research.

I try to get it right the first time.  Using tools like Ebay and Sportslots.com gets me very close to where I need to be.  But from there the task becomes more of a challenge to ensure that each and every card that fits the criteria of my ‘PC’ is met.  Thankfully, I can rely on the Internet for most of my answers…

As of right now, my Jim Palmer checklist is completed.  My Darryl Strawberry list is 90% of the way there, and I still have Greg Maddux and Eddie Murray to go.

Stay tuned because I am ready to shop.  Once these four checklists are complete you can expect quite a bit of activity from me as I jump right into my new player collections!!!

hard at work

Man I’m ready to shop!!!
