Happy Birthday Randy Johnson!!!

Happy Birthday Randy Johnson!!!

Randy Johnson turns 51 years old today.

And now that he has been out of the game for almost a few seasons, it gets pretty easy to look back at his amazing career and say that he is one of the greatest pitchers from his era and ranks pretty high on the all-time list as well.

With a pitching career that boasts of every major pitching accomplishment achieved, and some multiple times, Johnson was a machine during his playing days.  From No-Hitters to Cy Young awards to Strikeout records to perfect games to 300 wins to World Series championships, Johnson has done it all.

He is an absolute first-ballott Hall of Famer, and I personally feel that his talents would have dominated any generation of the sport.

Happy Birthday to ‘The Big Unit’!!!

Did You Know…

No Diamondbacks pitcher has won more games in a single season than Randy Johnson’s 24 wins from the 2002 baseball season.

2001 HEADLINE: Randy Johnson Strikes Out 20 Batters In One Game!!!

2001 HEADLINE: Randy Johnson Strikes Out 20 Batters In One Game!!!

On this day in 2001, Randy Johnson struck out 20 batters!!

That’s right 20! And it came against the Cincinnati Reds.

In that contest, Johnson pitched 9 innings while allowing just 3 hits and 1 run. He struck out 20 batters, while walking none. For the Reds, every starter struck out at least one time with two of them racking up three K’s a piece against ‘The Big Unit’.

Congratulations on this incredible feat – and Happy Anniversary!!!

Oh, Johnson’s team ended winning the game 4-3 in 11 innings. Johnson was awarded with a no-decision for his amazing efforts…

2008 Upper Deck Basbeall Heroes With Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddux, And Randy Johnson

2008 Upper Deck Basbeall Heroes With Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddux, And Randy Johnson

I’m always eager to check out any multi-player cards issued in modern sets.  For me, I just really like to examine the pairings of the players.

Some are done with a team theme.  Some are done due to some kind of comparable feat.  And some simply make no sense at all.

This card is from the 2008 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes set and it features Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson.

Take a look:

VINTAGE RYAN.MADDUX.UNIT

There is no debating that these are three of the most accomplished pitchers of the last 40 years.  Ryan is a Hall of Famer, and both Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson will rightfully sit beside him in Cooperstown when they are eligible for election.

Between the three of these players, you are looking at 982 pitching wins and 13,906 strikeouts.

DAMN!!

Randy Johnson 1989 Fleer Update ROOKIE Card!!!!

Randy Johnson 1989 Fleer Update ROOKIE Card!!!!

I am slowly and quietly building up a nice collection of Randy Johnson rookie baseball cards.

I’ve got the Topps card(s).  I’ve got the Donruss Card.  And the Score card too.  I have the base card from the Fleer set.

And now, I have landed the Fleer Update card for my collection.

Here it is:

VINTAGE R JOHNSON

And now, I need just one more.  Time to shop for the Upper Deck rookie card!!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #3 – Lot Of 2 Randy Johnson Rookie Cards

Baseball Card Show Purchase #3 – Lot Of 2 Randy Johnson Rookie Cards

There always seem to be a few rookie cards lurking in the dime bins at the card show.

Some are rookies you would not want for your collection.

Some are rookie cards that you already have and need no more of.

And some are of legendary, Hall of Fame caliber pitchers that dominated the sport for almost two decades.

There was no way that I was going to let these slip by me.  Yes, I have them already in my collection, but for twenty cents, I would consider this a pretty wise investment!

SHOW 3

And if there were more at that price, I would have scooped them up too!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #4 – Lot Of 3 1989 Randy Johnson ROOKIE Cards

Baseball Card Show Purchase #4 – Lot Of 3 1989 Randy Johnson ROOKIE Cards

These three cards were mixed in with another couple thousand cards with a sign that read 10 for $1.00.

I am glad that I stopped to check them out, because pulling out three Randy Johnson rookie cards from the 1989 Fleer and 1989 Topps Traded sets is a steal!!

These three pieces of cardboard set me back a cool thirty cents:

Yes, I was able to find more to help me round up to $1.00…  🙂
