My 2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’ Redemption Set Is COMPLETE!!! Come See!!!

My 2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’ Redemption Set Is COMPLETE!!!  Come See!!!

Well friends, another subset has been completed at ’30-Year Old Cardboard’.

And this one is superb!

Just like the ‘Prime 9 Home Run Legends’ set I built last year, this one boasts great color, sharp graphics, and a supremely high-gloss finish.

The 2011 Topps Prime 9 ‘Players Of The Week’ set features 9 players – 1 for each defensive position.  And the roster is loaded with major, major talent.

Here is a look at the whole set:

By completing this set, I have now finished both of the Topps ‘Prime 9’ redemption sets.  And I have to say that I wish that this was a series that never stopped.  The ‘Prime 9’ theme is one that could easily continue with new themes – and with solid production that matches the 2011 and 2012 sets that they already issued, the quality was definitely there!

Cheers to another completed subset!  Hip-Hip-Hooray!!

Happy Birthday Sandy Koufax!!!

Happy Birthday Sandy Koufax!!!

Today, Sandy Koufax turns 79 years old.

Koufax’s name is often mentioned in the same breath when people speak of the greatest pitchers of all-time.  Truth be told, during his 12-year career with the Brooklyn and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Koufax did not shine until the last 6 seasons he played.  But boy did he shine…  From 1961 to 1966, Koufax won 3 Cy Young awards and finished in 2nd place 1 time.  He also won an MVP award and finished 2nd twice for that honor.  It can be easily argued that Sandy Koufax was elected into baseball’s Hall Of Fame for this short, but incredible 6-year span.

So what do you get a guy that has so many accolades to his credit?  Sandy Koufax retired at the age of 31.  In today’s game there are players that have yet to hit their prime by 31…  I would love to see what Sandy could have done with 5 more seasons.  So that is my gift, 5 more healthy seasons as a pitcher for the Dodgers.

Happy Birthday Mr. Koufax!!!

2013 Topps Update ‘Postseason Heroes’ Subset – Sandy Koufax

2013 Topps Update ‘Postseason Heroes’ Subset – Sandy Koufax

The 2013 Topps Update baseball card set includes a subset tagged as ‘Postseason Heroes.  And with that theme, you would expect to find cards of modern players like Albert Pujols, Edgar Renteria, and Pablo Sandoval but none of these guys made the checklist.

That does leave room for some nice surprises…

This is the card of Sandy Koufax from the set:

Sandy Koufax made it to the World Series in four of his twelve big league campaigns.  He won titles in three of the four match-ups, good for a 75% clip.

In those 4 match-ups, Koufax competed in eight games, going 4-3.  He had an ERA of .95 in 57 innings of work, and he struck out 61 batters while walking just 11.

He was names as the 1965 World Series MVP due to his 3 starts that included two complete game shutout victories!

Did You Know…

Sandy Koufax was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in three different seasons.  He accomplished the feat in 1963, 1965, and 1966.

2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’ Redemption Set – Sandy Koufax

2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’ Redemption Set – Sandy Koufax

I had such a good time building the ‘Prime 9 – Home Run Legends’ set that as soon as it was completed, I jumped right into the ‘Prime 9 – Players Of The Week’ set.

The set was issued in the same manner – through exclusive redemption cards that could only be processed through hobby shops.

The set is ten cards deep, and features a great graphic display as well as a super-glossy finish.

This is the Sandy Koufax card from the set:

The back of the card features ‘9 Prime’ facts about Koufax.

A few of my favorites are:

  • Started his career as a catcher
  • Played basketball at University Of Cincinnati
  • 3-time Cy Young Award winner
  • Holds single-season strikeout mark for lefties with 382
  • Threw 4 No-hitters
  • Won ERA title in each of final five seasons

Baseball Card Show Purchase #5 – The Start Of A New Subset: 2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’

Baseball Card Show Purchase #5 – The Start Of A New Subset: 2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’

I was not seeking out the cards in this purchase, and to be honest I did not know that they existed.

But, since I did not have to dedicate any time to sifting through cards from the new Panini, Pinnacle, or Topps Chrome sets, I had a little more time to dig into some other things.

So, I looked for the ‘Silver Lining’ and I think that I did pretty well…

I was able to rescue two cards from the 2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players of the Week’ set.  These cards were obtained back in 2011 through a redemption process – buyers of 2011 Series 2 hobby boxes could obtain redemption cards that would be exchanged for these ‘Prime 9’ cards on a weekly basis throughout the second half of the 2011 season.

This set features one player for each position, and includes a mix of both former and current stars.

I fell upon two cards from this set – back to back – in a $1 box.  I bought both.

Here is the card of Ichiro:

And here is the card of Sandy Koufax:

As soon as I got home from the show, I researched the checklist.  This is a set I will be going after as it is star-studded.

Obviously Ichiro makes up one of the outfield spots in this set, and Koufax is the starting pitcher.

Consider this a new challenge for ’30-YOC’.  This set looks great and will be a perfect complement to my ‘Prime 9 Home Run Legends’ set that is nearing completion.

Baseball Card Show Purchase #10 – 1967 Topps National League 1966 Strikeout Leaders w/Koufax, Bunning, Veale

Never in a million years did I think that I would find a ‘real’ baseball card of Sandy Koufax in any bargain bins at the card show.

But, I did!  And I scooped it right up!!

Have a look:

The card comes from the 1967 Topps baseball card set and commemorates the strikeout leaders in the National League from the 1966 baseball season.

Sure, the corners are a bit soft and rounded, but it is SANDY FREAKIN’ KOUFAX!!!!
