Orel Hershiser 2003 Donruss Signature Series – ‘Legends Of Summer’

Orel Hershiser 2003 Donruss Signature Series – ‘Legends Of Summer’

I picked up this card for just $0.18 on a recent splurge with Sportlots.com.  And while I really have no intent of adding modern cards of Orel Hershiser to my completed set that contains every major-branded card from his days with the Dodgers, this one had my intrigued a bit…

Here is the card:

Serial numbered as 205/250, I have become a fan of this set.  The set honors some fantastic baseball players, many of which I enjoyed watching as a kid.

Oddly enough, the cards that I have scored from this set feature players that not only were ‘Legends Of Summer’ but also could be tagged as ‘Heroes Of Fall’.  Examples of that would be Jim Palmer, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, and now added to that list, Orel Hershiser.

Enjoy.

Happy Anniversary Orel Hershiser!!!

Orel Hershiser 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

Orel Hershiser 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

This is the first card of Orel Hershiser that I have picked up since completing my ‘Player Collection’ a few months back.

And while I did not intentionally wait a specific amount of time before going after Orel again, I am very happy to add this quality card to my expanding collection.

Issued by Topps in 2004, the card comes from their ‘All-Time Fan Favorites’ set and it is patterned after the 1988 Topps base design.

A great fit – I have to pose this question:  Was there a better pitcher in the sport of baseball during the 1988 baseball season than Orel Hershiser??

I think not!!!

My First Time – Orel Hershiser – September 1, 1983

My First Time – Orel Hershiser – September 1, 1983

The setting – Montreal, Canada.  Olympic Stadium.

From Hershiser – ‘I can’t say that I remember warming up or getting loose.  I just remember that suddenly I was on the mound at Olympic Stadium, and I kept telling myself to keep the ball down and get some grounders’.

The Boxscore – Expos 8, Dodgers 3.  Hershiser lasts just one inning allowing two hits and three runs while striking out one.

1988 Fleer Superstar Specials – Card #632 – Mike Scott & Orel Hershiser

1988 Fleer Superstar Specials – Card #632 – Mike Scott & Orel Hershiser

“Pitching Magic”

The Astros’ Mike Scott, and the Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser have been two of baseball’s best pitchers over the last three seasons.  Bothcontinued their fine careers in 1987, ranking near the top of the National League in many important categories.

In addition to his 16 victories, Scott ranked in the top five in the National League in strikeouts(233), shutouts(3), complete games(8), and innings pitched(247.2).  His 3.23 ERA was the 7th best in the league.  Mike was the National League’s Cy Young award winner in 1986, Scott capped off his incredible ’86 season by pitching a no-hitter in the division clinching game against the San Francisco Giants.

Hershiser’s 16-16 won-loss record belies the high quality of his season.  He was the most enduring of all National League pitchers – leading the league with 246.2 innings pitched.  He ranked third in the league in both complete games(10), and ERA(3.06).  Additionally, his 190 strikeouts were a career high.  Orel enjoyed his finest season in 1985 when he was 19-3 with a 2.03 ERA.

Signing Results: 1988 Mr. Everything – Orel Hershiser

Signing Results:  1988 Mr. Everything – Orel Hershiser

Taking way much longer than what I had expected, I signed up for a rare signing with Orel Hershiser that was supposed to occur late in the summer of 2010.

Hershiser is like an elusive animal – hard to catch, and oftentimes leaves you catching just a glimpse but never long enough to snap a picture.

So, I waited.  And waited.  And waited some more.

Through the end of the 2010 baseball season.  And through a broken arm, rehab, and bad timing – I waited….

Well, the wait paid off, as it usually does, and now I have signed baseball number 45 in my collection.

And it is signed brilliantly by 1988’s Mr. Everything – Orel Hershiser.  I opted for the 1988 NL CY inscription, and now that I see the ball, I wish that I went for a 1988 CY, NLCS MVP, WS MVP inscription.

But beggars cannot be chosers, and I am just thrilled to finally get this ball home.  It had been a very long time, but the result is absolutely worth the wait.

See for yourself…

I told ya!!

Signed perfectly by one of the pitchers that captivated me during my youth, this baseball marks the entire 1988 baseball season for me.  A season that I will never forget thanks to ‘The Bulldog’!!!

Happy Anniversary Orel Hershiser!!!
