Happy Birthday Livan Hernandez!!!

Happy Birthday Livan Hernandez!!!

Livan Hernandez turns 39 years old today!!!

Livan was the primary reason that the Florida Marlins won the World Series title in 1997.  If it wasn’t for his amazing pitching in the NLCS and World Series who knows if the Marlins would have been able to prevail.  I can still remember Livan screaming ‘I Love You Miami’ as he put the team on his back on the way to the title.

He had a very solid major league career, and he certainly left his mark on the sport and the Marlins franchise.

In 17 big league seasons, Livan compiled a 178-177 record in 474 starts.  He has a career ERA of 4.44 with 1,976 strikeouts and 1,066 walks.  Livan is a 2-time All-Star, a Silver Slugger Award winner, and a runner-up for the Rookie Of The Year Award.

Happy Birthday to the 1997 World Series MVP!!!

Did You Know…

In 2003, Marlins manager Jack McKeon became the oldest manager to take his team to the World Series.  The previous mark was set by Casey Stengel in 1960 who took the Yankees to the World Series at 70 years of age.

For Livan’s birthday I am going to give him a treat.  This is certainly not something you should give a professional athlete that is tuning up his body for another season, but I want Livan to enjoy himself.  I’m going to get him a $25 gift card to McDonalds.  Silly you say?  NO!!!  Livan loves fast food.  Hell, in the months after winning the World Series in 1997, it was rumored that Livan gained up to 43 pounds from his constant trips to the drive-thru window at McD’s!!!

Livan Hernandez 2002 Upper Deck World Series Heroes

Livan Hernandez 2002 Upper Deck World Series Heroes

If you were a baseball fan back in 1997 and you were watching the playoffs, it was hard to escape the effect that Livan Hernandez was having on the sport.

Simply stated, Livan was dominating all comers!!

I have often said that watching Livan Hernandez pitch while living in the South Florida area is the closest thing to ‘Fernando-Mania’ that Dodgers fans experienced in the very early 1980’s.

I picked up this card of Livan from the 2002 Upper Deck World Series Heroes set.  And it instantly becomes one of my favorites so thus far.

Have a look:

TTM Success: Former Florida Marlins Manager Jack McKeon!!!

TTM Success:  Former Florida Marlins Manager Jack McKeon!!!

You may recall that a few weeks ago I sent two baseballs out in hopes of obtaining some Florida Marlins inspired autographs.

Well, ball number one has been returned home.  And she is a beauty!!!

Have a look:

Signed perfectly by the former manager of the team, Jack McKeon gave me a sweet signature and a perfect complimentary inscription too!!!

McKeon took over the reigns of the team in 2003 when the Marlins were 16-22.  He led them to a 75-49 record once taking over the Marlins, and a Wild Card birth into the playoffs.

And as they say, the rest was history – a few lucky breaks, and some clutch performers.

And the Florida Marlins were the 2003 World Series champions!!!

This is a great autograph for my collection.  Now I just need to find Jim Leyland!!!

Thank you Mr. McKeon.

Livan Hernandez Signed Baseball With 1997 World Series MVP Inscription!!!!

Livan Hernandez Signed Baseball With 1997 World Series MVP Inscription!!!!

I have been on a Florida Marlins memorial kick for a little bit now…

Not only am I paying tribute to them by collecting each and every Topps issued team set in franchise history.

But I am also trying to scoop up some pretty neat collectibles too…

Like this signed baseball by Charlie Hough!!

And let’s not forget my sweet Al Leiter No-Hitter collection.

And now I can add another great item to my collection, a signed baseball by 1997 World Series MVP, Livan Hernandez.

The story goes like this – in a matter of hours, Livan was cut by the Astros and signed by the Braves.  The Braves train at Disney World for Spring Training and one of the guys that I am buddies with on one of the autograph collectors sites that I visit frequently got Livan to sign a ball for him.  He later questioned if he wanted it, so I swooped in with an offer that he was happy to accept.

And now, I have another great Marlins piece for my collection!!!!

Thanks for reading!!

Signing Results – Al Leiter & Steve Garvey!!!

Signing Results – Al Leiter & Steve Garvey!!!

Way back in 2011, MLAM (Major League Alumni Marketing was holding a signing with more than 40 former stars.  And after perusing that list, I found three players to go after, affordably.

Well, two of the three players have done their deeds, and one remains unsigned.

I will unveil player #3 to you when it arrives back to me, but for now, I am happy to present to you the two baseballs that are now back in my collection.

Ball #1 – Former Florida Marlin, Al Leiter, with the no-hitter inscription that I was seeking:

Ball #2 was signed for me by Steve Garvey

Here is a picture:

And he too included my requested inscription:

And an added bonus inscription too:

Two great autographs for my collection – 1 of a player that enjoyed watching as a kid, and 1 of my favorite Marlins of all-time!!!

Thank you gentlemen, and thank you MLAM!!!

Jack ‘The Ripper’ Clark Signed Baseball

Jack ‘The Ripper’ Clark Signed Baseball

You may recall that a few months ago I sent in a baseball for a Harold Baines signing.  Well, I actually sent in two baseballs for that event.

1 was for me, and 1 was for a reader of this site – McGee-Fan51.  Gerad has been a loyal reader of this blog since the beginning, and he also happens to really like Harold Baines.  So, I hooked him up.

And as ‘payback’, Gerad took care of me at a recent autograph signing he attended in St. Louis.  The player?

Jack Clark!!!

Here is the ball:

Clark has a pretty sweet autograph, huh??  And for a slugger, his signature is quite artsy…

Clark was a true slugger during his playing days!!  From the moment that Clark earned a full-time job in the majors, he was producing runs at a torrid pace.  In total, Clark crushed 340 homers and drove in 1,180 runs.  He smashed at least 20 home runs in 11 of his 18 big league seasons, with his career high of 35 coming in 1987.

Thank you McGee-Fan51 and Thank you Mr. Clark!!!

Luis Tiant Autographed Baseball – YES!!!

Luis Tiant Autographed Baseball – YES!!!

With all of the attention that I have been paying to the ‘Big Red Machine’, it is very hard to ignore the great Red Sox teams of the mid-70’s.  And of that squad, my personal favorites are Luis Tiant and Fred Lynn.

Tiant was an enormous talent, with one heck of a personal story.  A baseball-rich family, Luis wanted to play baseball at the highest level and eventually accomplished that very goal.

Well, while shopping on Ebay a few weeks ago, I sought out autographed baseballs of Tiant, and to my surprise the selection was limited.

But, I did find one that was perfect – the auto, and the price tag.

And now, that beautifully signed baseball is a part of my collection.

Have a peek:

Awesome!!!
