Dan Uggla Connects For Home Run #200 Of His Career As Braves Beat Marlins 11-0

By STEVEN WINE | The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP)  Dan Uggla hit two homers in his first game at Marlins Park, including a tape-measure blow off the home-run sculpture, and Tim Hudson pitched a five-hitter for his 13th career shutout Tuesday night to help the Atlanta Braves beat Miami 11-0.

Uggla hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, and he scored a direct hit on the middle of the sculpture with a two-run homer in the ninth estimated at 432 feet. That sent a thud reverberating throughout the ballpark and increased his homer total to 10 this season and 200 for his career.

Uggla also doubled and scored before hitting a two-run single to finish with four hits and five RBIs, both season highs. He spent his first five seasons with the Marlins and hit 78 home runs in their former home, the most by any player.

Dan Uggla’s Hitting Streak Ends At 33 Games In Braves’ Loss

Dan Uggla’s Hitting Streak Ends At 33 Games In Braves’ Loss

ATLANTA, Aug 14 (Reuters) – Atlanta slugger Dan Uggla(notes)
saw his Major League-best 33-game hitting streak come to an
end as the Braves fell to the Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Sunday.

Uggla nearly kept his red-hot stretch going in the fifth
inning when he sent a fly ball into shallow right field, but
Chicago second baseman Darwin Barney(notes) made a diving catch to deny
the hit.

Uggla finished 0-for-3 with a sacrifice-fly for his first
hit-less game in over a month.

The Atlanta infielder had surpassed the previous top hitting
streak of the baseball season, a 30-game stretch produced by the
Los Angeles Dodgers’ Andre Ethier(notes).

Uggla’s run helped him turn around his hitting struggles. He
was batting just .173 at the start of the streak but has now
rocketed his average up to .231.

He also has 27 home runs this season for the Braves (70-51)
who are leading the National League Wild Card race.

MIAMI — Dan Uggla understands why so many are surprised that he has been able to prolong his career-best hitting streak for more than a month. But now that the Braves’ second baseman has reached this point, he is simply focused on adding to the surprise.

Uggla extended his hitting streak to 30 games — the longest active streak in the Major Leagues this season — with an infield single in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s 4-3, 11-inning win over the Marlins at Sun Life Stadium.

Uggla and Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier now share the longest hitting streaks posted in the Majors this year. Ethier’s streak ended in May.

“I think the loudest cheer of the night was when [Uggla] beat out that ball,” Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said.

All-time Atlanta hit streaks
The longest hitting streaks in Braves history:
# Player Year
31 Rico Carty 1970
30 Dan Uggla 2011
29 Rowland Office 1976
28 Marquis Grissom 1996

Uggla bounced his close friend Clay Hensley’s 1-2 curveball to shortstop Emilio Bonifacio, who snared the ball in the outfield but was unsuccessful in his attempt to record the out at first base.

Through the first two games of this series against his former team, Uggla has gone 2-for-9, and both of his hits have been infield singles. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he has registered nine infield singles during this streak and had a total of six in the previous 86 games he had played.

“There are going to be times when you don’t feel as good, and you have to battle and take what you can get,” said Uggla, who has improved his batting average from .173 to .220 during the streak.

When the Braves conclude their three-game series against the Marlins on Wednesday night, Uggla will have a chance to match the Atlanta record Rico Carty set in 1970 with a 31-game hitting streak.

While playing each of the previous five seasons with the Marlins, Uggla developed a close bond with Hensley. He extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a three-run homer off the Marlins right-hander on July 29.

Uggla has hit .345 (41-for-119) with 12 homers during this streak that dates back to July 5.

My First Time – Andruw Jones – August 15, 1996

The Setting – Veteran’s Stadium. Philadelphia, PA.

From Jones – ‘I had to get right in there that first day and face Curt Schilling.  He threw me nothing but fastballs, with so much gas on them.  It was unbelievable.  I struck out twice and popped out.  I know I got a hit, but first came the strikeouts.’

The Box Score – Braves 8, Phillies 5.  Jones went 1-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Did You Know…

When Atlanta Braves’ second baseman Mark Lemke tripled three times in the 1991 World Series, he was the first player to do so since the New York Yankees’ Billy Johnson smacked three in 1947.

He Did It Again. Cameron Maybin Launches Another Ball Into The Stands!!!

He did it again!!  And it’s the second time in less than a week too.

Cameron Maybin just launched a ball deep into the stands at Turner Field to give the Marlins a lead against the Atlanta Braves.

And just like last week’s blast against the Mets that gave the team a lead that they would not relinquish, this home run also gave the Marlins the lead in the ballgame.  Hopefully the result is the same…
