Happy Birthday Warren Spahn!!!

Today we celebrate Warren Spahn’s birthday.

A 21-year big league veteran, Warren Spahn was solidifying his spot as one of the game’s greatest pitchers way before the likes of Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, and Bob Gibson.

Over the course of his playing days, Spahn collected 363 wins – including 13 seasons of at least 20!! A truly amazing and durable hurler, Spahn started 665 contests during his career, and finished way more than half(382 to be exact) including 63 shutouts.

Warren Spahn was a 15-time All-Star and the 1957 Cy Young Award winner. He was a member of the 1957 Milwaukee Braves World Series championship winning team in which he started 2 games, going 1-1.

2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-11 – Warren Spahn, Milwaukee Braves

2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-11 – Warren Spahn, Milwaukee Braves

I really like the ‘Mound Dominance’ subset that Topps included in their 2012 base set.  The cards are sharp, the graphics are solid, and I am a sucker for cards that pay homage to a historic baseball event.

The ‘Mound Dominance’ set recalls 15 amazing pitching performances in major league history.

This is card#11 – Warren Spahn, Milwaukee Braves

WARREN SPAHN

The Dominant Day – September 16, 1960. On this day, Warren Spahn threw a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.  The 39-year old Spahn collected his 20th win of the season with this no-hitter.  And he was as dominant as ever; striking out 15 batters and walking just two in the complete game shutout.

Progress – 11/15

It has been years since I picked up a card of Warren Spahn – more than three years to be a little more specific.

I recently went on a Hall of Fame shopping spree on Sportlots.com.  My rules were simple – pay the lowest price that you can for the cards, and only shop with one seller.

So, that is exactly what I did.  And I kept my shopping themed to modern cards of Hall of Fame legends.

All of the cards were bought ‘on the blind’ as Sportlots.com does not require images for selling cards on their site.

In total, I picked up more than twenty cards.

And that is how I scooped up this one:

VINTAGE SPAHN

Not a bad card at all, especially since I did not get to see it prior to making my purchase…

Did You Know…

Warren Spahn led all major league pitchers with 202 wins during the 1950’s.  The second place pitcher was Robin Roberts who trailed Spahn by three with 199.

Did You Know…

Starting at the age of 36, Braves’ left-hander Warren Spahn led the National League in complete games for a record seven consecutive seasons(157-63).  Spahn led the league outright each of those seasons except for 1960 when he tied with Lew Burdette and Vern Law.  Spahn also led the NL in complete games in 1949 and 1951 and finished second in five other seasons(1947, 1950, 1953, 1954, and 1956).

My take – Ahhhh, the complete game – an art form that is almost non-existent in toady’s game.  Back during Spahn’s era, it was not odd that a good starter would finish half of the games he played in.

Did You Know…

Willie Mays is the only member of the 500 home run club to hit his first homer off a future Hall of Famer(Warren Spahn).  Sammy Sosa, another member of the club, hit his first home off of Roger Clemens, who will certainly be a Hall of Famer, too.

My take – Just another comparison to a baseball legend that Sammy Sosa does not deserve…  Enough said!!
