I want this to be the number on my paycheck.  I want this to be the number of Andre Dawson baseball cards that I own.  Hell, I would even take this number as a lottery prize.

Instead, I count this number as the single greatest individual accomplishment in baseball!!!

On this day in 1985, Pete Rose broke the Major League record for most career hits with 4,192.

I remember watching this game live on TV with my dad when I was just 9 years old.  Before the Internet and before Sportscenter became a mainstream media outlet, people tuned into games like this to witness history.  Both my dad and I joined the packed stadium and gave Rose a standing ovation as he became the greatest hitter baseball had ever seen.

When this headline hit the papers 25+ years ago I am pretty certain that the feeling in the Cincinnati area was one of sheer joy!!!

A former baseball star was coming back to the city to once again play for and now manage the team that he helped become one of baseball’s greatest dynasties.

What a ride Pete took Reds’ fans on once he came back to the team.  From making history by becoming the game’s all-time hits leader to being banished from the game for gambling.

No matter how you look at it and how you feel about Pete Rose today, you must admit that this was a historic day for the sport back in 1984!!!

‘Charlie Hustle’ turns 73 years old today.

I am a Pete Rose fan.  I am a Pete Rose supporter.  I undoubtedly believe that Pete Rose belongs in  the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The list of accolades are endless.  His accomplishments are amazing.  He is a record-breaking, hit producing, ball player that ranks with the sport’s all-time greats.

I am proud to say that one of the greatest memories from watching baseball with my dad in my youth was watching Pete Rose collect hit number 4,192 of his career.  That moment on the field, and that memory formed in my living room as a 9-year old kid, lives with me today more than 25 years later.

Thank you for playing the game the way that you did.  Happy Birthday Mr. Rose!!!

Just 8 games into the 1984 baseball season, and in front of 46,000+ fans in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, Pete Rose made baseball history by becoming just the second player to collect 4,000 hits.

On his home turf, and facing his former team, Rose’s Expos were taking on the Philadelphia Phillies.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, Rose smacked a double off of Jerry Koosman giving him 4,000 hits for his career.

Rose was the first player to collect 4,000 hits since the legendary Ty Cobb.

On this day back in 1963, Pete Rose made his major league debut during Spring Training for the Cincinnati Reds.

The game’s all-time hits king established himself early as he collected two hits in two at-bats against the Chicago White Sox.  And although nobody, except maybe for Pete, would have predicted what was going to follow over the next 24 big league seasons, it is very clear based on his debut performance that at the age of 22 Pete Rose had big league skills!!

On this day in 1978, Pete Rose signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies.

After spending the first 16 seasons of his big league career with the Reds, Rose would spend the next 5 with the Phillies.  And during that 5-year stretch, Rose would amass 826 hits while being named an All-Star four times, winning a Silver Slugger award, and a World Series title in 1980!!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #2 – Lot Of 2 Pete Rose 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Cards – Base & Curtain Call

One of my goals as the show was to seek out some of the new Panini releases.  This is a tough task at this particular card show because not too many of the dealers work with the Panini product.

Thankfully, the dealer that the dime boxes with him had some cards from the new Panini Hometown Heroes set.  And I grabbed a bunch of them – and you’ll see them littered throughout the next few posts.

Two of the cards that I scored were of Pete Rose – and they look really nice.

For some reason, maybe because we’re so used to it, Pete’s cards don’t look too bad without the logos…

This set is very nice.  And my ‘want list’ from it is still pretty big!
