Jose Fernandez 2014 Bowman – Green Border

Jose Fernandez 2014 Bowman – Green Border

With today being Jose Fernandez’s birthday, I had to find another card of the reigning NL ROY to show off on the blog.

And I have found a pretty nice one.

The card comes from the 2014 Bowman baseball card set, and it is the Green colored parallel to the base card.  Each Green parallel is serial numbered to just 150 copies.  My card of Fernandez is stamped as 128/150.

Happy Birthday Jose Fernandez!

Happy Birthday Jose Fernandez!

The Miami Marlins phenom turns 22-years old today.

He stormed into the league early in the 2013 baseball season and he quickly became a name getting national attention.  Jose Fernandez has the ‘IT’ factor.

During his rookie campaign, Fernandez made 28 starts, going 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA.  In 172 innings of work, Jose stuck out 187 batters while walking just 58.  He averaged 9.7 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched and also had a WHIP of .979.

Best of all, the city of Miami embraced him.  Surely part was due to his Cuban heritage.  But, he also displays an obvious love for the game as the smile he sports both on the mound and in the dugout were captured quite often on television.  Often the first player out of the dugout to celebrate wins and start walk-off celebrations, Fernandez’s joy of the sport spread through the team’s clubhouse as the Marlins had some of the most exciting end-of-game celebrations led by #16.

As he prepares to battle back from Tommy John surgery so he can reclaim his spot as the team’s ‘Ace’ during the 2015 baseball season, ’30-YOC’ wants to wish Jose Fernandez a speedy recovery and of course, a Happy Birthday!

Giancarlo Stanton 2012 Topps Series 2 – Sabermetrics Stats Short Print

Giancarlo Stanton 2012 Topps Series 2 – Sabermetrics Stats Short Print

Seeing that Topps’ Series 2 set included ‘extra’ cards in the release from the Series 1 set got me excited at the opportunity to add another card of Giancarlo Stanton to my rainbow of cards from the Series 1 release.

This time around, the cards are tagged as ‘Sabermetrics Stats’ cards, each one being short-printed and inserted into Series 2 packs.

And as the name of the card states, the cards offer different stats on the back, Sabermetrics style numbers.

Let me show you the card!

Front – same exact front as Giancarlo’s base card

Back – here is the big change!  No batting avergae, runs scored, or home runs.  There are Sabermetrics stats only!

Kind of a neat idea from Topps, especially with all of the chatter using these stats on MLB Network.

A great addition to my growing rainbow!  I’ll have to show it off again soon…

Fergie Jenkins 2014 Topps Archives – Silver Foil Edition!

Fergie Jenkins 2014 Topps Archives – Silver Foil Edition!

The Fergie Jenkins ‘Archives Train’ keeps rolling here at ’30-YOC’ as I have now grabbed three of the four cards of Fergie from the 2014 Topps Archives set.

This is my first ‘Silver Foil’ card from the Archives set that I have picked up, and it is pretty shiny – reminding my of the platinum cards from the 2011 Topps Lineage release.

Each ‘Silver Foil’ card is serial numbered to 99 copies.  Mine is numbered as 54/99.

Of the three cards, I would say that this one is my favorite so far.

And now, I just need one more card of Fergie from the set and my ‘Jenkins Archives Rainbow’ is complete!

Willie McCovey 2014 Topps Archives – Base

Willie McCovey 2014 Topps Archives – Base

Today marks the anniversary of Willie McCovey’s debut in the major leagues.  That event occurred in 1959, 55 years ago!

So, why not feature another sweet card of ‘Stretch’ on this special day?

The card below is from this year’s Topps Archives set.  The card design that McCovey is featured in is from the 1989 Topps flagship set.

Thus far, this is my favorite card from the 1989 Topps portion of the Archives release.  Many feature non-action, close-up images.  While this one does not offer action, it does give us a sense of the size and strength of McCovey as not too many skinny shortstops or second baseman can walk around the field with three pieces of fresh lumber on their shoulders…

I like it!
