Randy Hundley 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Autographed Baseball Card!!

Randy Hundley 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Autographed Baseball Card!!

I have always liked Randy Hundley.  Partly due to his being Fergie Jenkins’ favorite battery mate.  And partly due to his being the father of former big league catcher Todd Hundley.

Randy was there for all of that action with the Cubs during the 1960’s.  He starred right alongside Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Fergie Jenkins, and Ernie Banks!!

He saw it all!  And I am thrilled to add this signed baseball card to my collection!!!

You won’t believe what I paid for this one…

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Gary Matthews, Sr. – Game Used Bat Card!!!

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Gary Matthews, Sr. – Game Used Bat Card!!!

What a sweet looking card!!!   I love the design and the Ivy leaves added behind the Cubs logo makes me think about good old Wrigley Field.

To the average fan, Gary Matthews probably doesn’t rank too high on their list of the greatest Cubs to play the game.  But to the loyal fans cheering for the team on the ‘North Side’, Matthews starred on our team for 3 1/2 seasons between 1984-87.  His best season as a Cubbie was in 1984 when he finished 5th for the league MVP award as he hit .291/14/82.

And check out that hunk of wood next to Matthews’ photo – SWEET!!!

Ernie Banks 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Game-Used Jersey Card

Ernie Banks 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Game-Used Jersey Card

I completed this Cubs themed set of cards over a year ago.  But, I still have the search saved in ‘My Ebay’ account so I get notified of new listings when they are posted.

So, I have picked up a few relic cards from the same set – Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, Fergie Jenkins, and now the one and only, Ernie Banks!

And the card features a great swatch of that old Grey, wool uniform that Ernie proudly wore!

Take a look:

AWESOME!!!!

Billy Williams 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Game-Used Jersey Card

Billy Williams 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Game-Used Jersey Card

There is no doubt that Billy Williams belongs in this set.  One of the most famous Chicago Cubs of all-time, Williams was a fan favorite at Wrigley Field for 16 magnificent seasons.

Williams’ impressive resume displays the following – Rookie of the Year(1961), 2-time runner up for the MVP(’70 & ’72), 6-time All-star, Batting Title(’72), 2,711 career hits, 426 home runs, 1,410 runs scored, 1,475 RBI, and a career batting average of .290.

And the fact that this card features a Grey swatch from one of Williams’ Cubs jerseys is simply icing on the cake!!!

Enjoy.

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Game Used Bat – Mark Grace

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Game Used Bat – Mark Grace

The ‘Greats Of The Game’ subset issued by Fleer in 2006 may be my favorite subset from this millenium.  A classic look combined with a perfectly executed team-theme, I knew that I wanted to collect these as soon as I saw them.

First, collected the Cubs set.  And currently, I am working on the Reds set.  But I still have several of my ‘old’ searches saved in my Ebay account so when I saw this card, I knew that I wanted it:

It could very easily be argued that Mark Grace is the greatest Cubs hitter from my lifetime.  So, naturally adding a Game-Used bat card of Grace to my collection makes this Cubs fan feel good!!!

2006 Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game Game-Used Bat Card – Gary Matthews, Sr.

I finished the base set of this ‘Cubs’ tribute a while back.  And once done, I always thought it would be a nice challenge to go after the game-used bat and jersey cards from the same series.  I have shopped for these a few different times and that dream may be tough to conquer.  But that doesn’t mean that I cannot take baby steps towards coming close to that goal.

When I saw this card on Ebay for just $1.00, I scooped it up with nobody else making a bid.  I am very excited to add this card to my collection!!

Andre Dawson 2006 Fleer Greats Of The Game – Bat Relic Card

Andre Dawson 2006 Fleer Greats Of The Game – Bat Relic Card

I have 2 of these base cards – 1 in my Greats of the Game Cubs set and 1 in my Andre Dawson player collection.

When I found this relic card on Ebay with the low price tag of just $1.99, I pounced on it.  And now, it is finally at home in my collection.

I love the card, I love the theme, and now I need to get myself the one featuring a piece of a game-used jersey.

I may have to do a little research to see what some completed sales are priced at, but it would be a ton of fun to not just have the completed base card set, but to also have the completed bat relic set and the game-used jersey card set too.

Very Cool!!!

Let me think about it…

My Chicago Cubs ‘Greats Of The Game’ Set Is Complete!!!

It took me 4 1/2 months  to collect this 10-card set, but I am happy to finally announce that I have completed my first subset since getting back into the hobby last fall.

While 4 1/2 months may seem like a hell of  a long time to buy 10 cards, I really wanted to take my time with this set.  I was in no rush, obviously, to finish it but now that it’s complete I am proud to bring you this.

My opinion of the final product is both positive and negative.

First the negatives – I don’t understand why Fleer would use both color and Black & White photography with this set.  By looking at the 10 cards above, it’s very clear to me that the color pictures look much better and work best with this set’s design.  While I am a big fan of the modern-day card that features an old-school look, I think that color photo was the way to go with this set.  Another complaint would be the image selection used.  A few examples – Mark Grace in front of empty stands?  Ryno with his head down while swinging the bat?  Bruce Sutter looking stunned for his portrait?  There are hundreds of pictures of these players in their Cubs’ uniforms that Fleer could have used – they should have spent a few more minutes working on their ‘image quality’.  Lastly, this should have been an 11-card set – Lee Smith deserves a seat alongside these ‘Cubs Greats of the Game’.

And now the positives – The concept of this set is perfect for a team collector.  And the artist or group of artists that put this design together should be commended for their excellent work.  The use of the Cubs’ Red, White, and Blue color scheme makes these cards come alive.  And the addition of the Ivy from Wrigley Field’s outfield wall is genius!!!

I really enjoyed putting this set together, and even now that it’s completed, I still enjoy looking at it.  I think that is what is ultimately important when it comes to building things for your collection.  The building process is fun – but enjoying the completed work feels even better!

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Ryne Sandberg

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Ryne Sandberg

Finally, #23 is home.  Strictly because I was always looking for a better deal, this card escaped me for months.  I am happy to announce that it is now part of my collection at last.

No player since Ernie Banks defines the Chicago Cubs team the way that Ryne Sandberg does.  The loyalty that the fans had to Ryno during his playing days and well after is remarkable and well deserved.

Although Ryno did not have the pleasure of playing on too many winning teams with the Cubs, his effort on a nightly basis is what made him a fan favorite in the ‘Windy City’.  A superb defender with a knack for delivering incredible offense, Ryno was the glue for the Chicago Cubs franchise for 16 terrific seasons.

A classy player.  A Chicago favorite.  A Hall of Famer.

Ryno

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Ron Santo

Chicago Cubs Greats Of The Game – Ron Santo

I finally found one of these; and at a good price too.  I’d been hunting for weeks but now it’s mine!!

Welcome home Mr. Santo.  Please join your friends Billy, Fergie, Ray, and Andre in my collection.  Oh, and please keep a spot open for Ryno as I was told he would be dropping by sometime soon.
