The Marlins Attendance Was What???

It has been reported by several media outlets that the attendance for this afternoon’s Marlins/Braves game was just 600 people.  Yes, I said(typed) it correctly, 600!  Both Yahoo Sports and CNN confirm the counts.  The paid attendance number is over 11,000 so this figure of 600 is quite puzzling.

The Marlins had several things working against them as they headed into today’s game:

1) After a holiday weekend, many people may have taken an extra day off on Friday or Tuesday to have a 4-day weekend.  But, everyone would be back to work today.

2) School is in session.

3) The Marlins played Tuesday night at 7PM, so many people would be unable to turn around and be at the park 15 hours later for the next game.

4) The Braves have been terrible this year.  Anyone that bought tickets early in the year with hopes of seeing Smoltz, Glavine, and Chipper would surely be disappointed with the names on the Brave’s line-up card.

5) It was 93 degrees today with 100% humidity.

Luis Gonzalez of the Marlins said that in his entire career he had never seen such a small crowd.  This is coming from a guy that has been playing organized baseball for 25+ years.

Look, I am guilty too.  I wasn’t there, but I am not 1 of the 10,500 that bought a ticket and pulled a no-show either.  But it still leaves me puzzled as to why so many paying customers bailed out on the team…

And for the record, my high school graduating class had 950 members, or 150% of today’s paid attendance!

WoW!!!  Everyone gets a foul ball today!!!

  1. #4 is certainly a factor. The Braves are literally running out their Triple-A club at this point. The injuries have been horrific.

  2. I can’t believe they can afford a team…….

  3. Hate to see that . . . baseball is such a great sport, it shouldn’t matter what the records are – it’s the game.

I’ve seen more people at an afternoon minor league baseball game. Maybe the Marlins should get a marketing department?
