Yes, it is still a bid weird for me to be collecting baseball cards of Wade Boggs in a New York Yankees uniform.

But, I am dedicated to honoring Boggs and his entire career, so that means more Yankees and Rays cards to come in my future.

This card of Boggs is from the 1996 Pinnacle baseball card set and is part of the subset tagged as ‘Hardball Heroes’.

Even after his Sox days, Wade Boggs still had that mighty, left-handed swing.  And the image that Pinnacle chose for this card shows it off nicely.

The ‘Hardball Heroes’ theme is cool one, and I really like the ‘Double H’ graphic that Pinnacle created for the set.  The stitching that flows under the subset theme name is a very nice touch too!

Here is another neat oddball baseball card of Reggie Jackson that I have scored while celebrating Mr. October throughout October.

Let me also say sorry for the bad scan.

 

The card is from the 1984 Topps Cereal Series set.  The ’84 set was the 1st issue of this release.  The set consisted of 33 total cards, and was distributed in Purina cereal boxes or through a mail-order program.

It’s nice to see Reggie in another set like this, I just wish that the card offered us an image that better displayed why he was chosen as one of 33 players to be included.

Notes From His 1975 Season:  Bill Sudakis played in 50 games during the 1975 baseball season, splitting time between the Angels and Indians.  Combined, Sudakis had 16 hits in 104 at-bats en route to a .154 batting average.  He had 2 doubles and 2 home runs while scoring 8 runs and driving in 9.

Notes From Career:  Bill Sudakis played for six different teams during his 8-year big league career.  He is a lifetime .234 hitter with 362 hits to his credit.  Sudakis has 56 career RBI and 50 home runs to go along with 177 runs scored and 214 RBI.

Did You Know…

The first New York Mets third baseman to be selected to represent the team during the MLB All-Star game was Howard Johnson.   Johnson’s first selection came in 1989.

1994 HEADLINE: Greg Maddux Wins Third Straight Cy Young Award

1994 HEADLINE: Greg Maddux Wins Third Straight Cy Young Award

On this day in 1994, Greg Maddux won his third straight Cy Young award.  He was the first pitcher in major league history to earn the award in three consecutive seasons.

Being one of the best pitchers in the sport over that length of time is a major accomplishment.  And when some of your greatest competition is coming from your teammates, I am sure that the pride of being the ‘Ace’ of the staff gave Maddux even more gratification.

Here is a look at Maddux’s numbers from those three seasons:

1992 – 20-11, 2.18 ERA, 9 complete games, All-Star, Gold Glove

1993 – 20-10, 2.36 ERA, 10 complete games, Gold Glove

1994 – 16-6, 1.56 ERA, 10 complete games, All-Star, Gold Glove

Oh, and it should be noted that Maddux went on to win the Cy Young award in 1995 too – setting an all-time record with four consecutive wins!!

I did very little collecting of baseball cards during the 1990’s and no collecting in the very late 1990’s.

So, when I see cards like this, I am excited to experience something ‘new’ for myself even though the product was issued almost 20 years ago.

 

This card of Tony Gwynn comes from the 1998 Fleer Circa set and from the subset tagged as ‘Thunder’.  As you can see, the image of Gwynn is a sweet one, and the graphics offer us a gaudy 1990’s look.  I’m not sure what all of the scribble in the upper-right corner is supposed to be, but thankfully is does not detract from the overall product or great image of #19.
